^^^Are they off probation for cheating already? My how time flies…

Will be fun for Sonny Dykes’s Bear RAID to topple the #1 team at Memorial after we knock off the Mildcats. Would be a great way to kickoff a Rose Bowl winning season. A Bear can dream… :D

“The Big10 lost all semblance of caring about academics when it accepted Rutgers and Nebraska.”

Nebraska is a fine academic institution. Most people think the “N” on the Nebraska helmet stands for “Nebraska”, but it really stands for “Nawledge”.

Only the very best can lose AAU status.

Johns Hopkins Men’s Lacrosse Joins Big Ten

Go Hopkins!! Go B1G!! lol

Terps and Blue Jays’ Rivalry is now preserved!! :)

I’d like to see more BIG schools add M&W lacrosse and ice hockey now. Good timing.

Illinois golf national runner ups!

@barrons

^^Amen to that!! :)

This is an absolutely great move for the B1G imho! Hop’s academic reputation is stellar and they are the NY Yankees of college lacrosse. So far as BTN is concerned, it will also fill up some quality programming after basketball season for roughly 2 months. A perfect match made in heaven! :p

The greatest rivalry in college lacrosse - Johns Hopkins vs. Maryland

[Johns Hopkins Official Athletic Site](http://www.hopkinssports.com/sports/m-lacros/spec-rel/041013aaa.html)

Great. Now two more teams will kick Michigan’s butt every year! At least it might help with recruiting since they are both powerhouses.

Oh! I always thought it meant No Bail!

This is big. Of the current top 20 D-1 men’s lax teams, 4 are/will be B1G (Ohio State, Maryland, Penn State, Johns Hopkins). Ivy League also has 4 (Cornell, Yale, Princeton, Penn), ACC 4 (Duke, Syracuse, N. Carolina, Notre Dame), Patriot League 3 (Lehigh, Bucknell, Loyola-MD). So B1G instantly becomes a power conference in lax, and the only one with anything resembling national television exposure through BTN. Good for B1G recruiting, and good for BTN programming, especially as the network expands its footprint further into the Northeast.

Interesting how “Eastern” a sport it is. Of the current D-1 top 20, the only teams west of the Appalachians are Ohio State and Denver. Well, and I guess Syracuse, technically speaking., but it’s a pretty Eastern school. B1G movement in lacrosse might be good for the sport as well, giving it greater exposure in the Midwest through BTN.

^ women’s lacrosse has a lot more teams then the men … and with much more geographic coverage. My guess is lax will be the big growth sport in college over the next 20 years.

This is potentially huge from the academic/research point of view as well. Yes, Lacrosse has a big following in the Northeast and the Kid Atlantic and will increase the conference’s exposure in those very important markets, first with the addition of Maryland and Rutgers, and now with Johns Hopkins joining as well. But what is really huge is that Johns Hopkins is one of the best universities on the planet and has the largest research budget of any university in the US, if not the world. Their joining the Big 10 for their sole Division I program could naturally push them to also join the CIC and other Big 10 research and academic initiatives.

Also, JHU is trying to become more mainstream. They have just added a Business school in an attempt to become more well rounded. I would not be surprised if more sports were to switch to Division I.

To get further penetration into the NYC market, the B1G also announced today that they’ve signed an 8-year deal with the NY Yankees to send a B1G team to the Pinstripe Bowl, held in Yankee Stadium.

[Big Ten team to play New Era Pinstripe Bowl - ESPN New York](Big Ten team to play New Era Pinstripe Bowl - ESPN)

Well, ya gotta start somewhere. B1G signage at all Yankees home games is worth a lot in a sports-crazed, Yankees-loving market. And while the deal doesn’t commit the B1G to any particular slot in its final conference standings, the prospect of having a Penn State, Michigan, Wisconsin, Michigan State, or Nebraska cycle through has got to be a big boost to the Pinstripe Bowl, which to be honest I had never heard before today.

Good point, Alexandre. The CIC angle is huge, and probably played a bigger role in Johns Hopkins’ decision to join the B1G/CIC than lacrosse. It’s a natural, solidifying the CIC’s role as the #1 research “conference” and giving JHU a natural home among elite research institutions.

I never post here, but I would like to see B1G field more soccer teams.
