Big4/Corp Finance

What is the starting salary for corporate finance, at a big 4? In case I can't get into I-banking after undergrad, I notice a lot of IU students do corporate finance work at like Deloitte and Touche and PriceWaterHouse, and I was wondering what is the starting salary for some of these gigs? I can only find salaries for accounting professionals, but not for the corporate finance prof.

an answer maybe? No?

Dont have any experience, but from what I have read on the forms the base is about the same as mid tier ib (50-55) with the bonus being less than 5K assuming you are talking about the transactional advisory groups (that basically do due dilligance for ibanks at big4)

but some of the big 4 firms have actual middle market ibanks where i think the bonus is more along the lines of mid market ibanking. (KPMG being the most noticable, and EY just sold theirs to guliani ptns)

I have been thinking about what is the best option if you dont get into BB ib out of undergrad and i am really torn. if you go do TS/corp fin at a big 4 firm you get the benefits of working at a huge company as well as the name reccogniton, but you also get paid a little bit less and are still kinda labeled and accountant (for better or worse) i also think you would travel more with a big 4 firm which could be fun?

the other option would be to try and get into a mid market ib firm (like lincoln partners or harris williams) where i think the pay is higher but you dont have the prestige of working at a big reputable company.

Another option that i dont usually consider would be working as a finaical anaylist at a fortune 500 comp. it could be fun, not many hours and you would get stock options. not really sure about what looks better (if it really matters) to bschool adcoms...if ibanking is your ultimate goal.

So i really dont know, right now i am hopping i can get a BB job but if not im leaning more toward big 4 then mabey bschool down the road.

if anyone else has insight (about what to do if you dont get BB) please post

Thanks man, if I can get close to 60k coming out of undergrad, I would be satisfied. And of course the more the better. If I can make 60k, and work lesser hours, I can eat of that, until I get into bschool.

What are the "big 4" accounting firms?

Deloitte & Touche
PriceWaterHouseCoopers
Ernst & Young
KPMG

from what ive heard they work bad hours not like ibanking but 60-70 a week and a lot of travel, however you get the name on your resume and you will learn a lot from the better training than a small bank and from actually working on big deals--you will at least get exposed to part of it due dilligance and i think that quite a few guys move from big 4 corp fin to ibanking after a few years and at that point you will be so much more experienced than a liberal arts major from harvard that you will outperform them (hopeuflly) and get promoted to associte

just what im thinking, but yea i think 60 including bonus is reasonable to expect and thats still a lot of money

You could always use the Big 4 experience to get into an MBA program and then make the shift.

But yeah i've heard Transaction Services is probably the best route from Big 4 to I-Banking

Can experience from a job such as accounting, I-Banking, or M-consulting help in getting a job help to land a job in any of those 3?

what do you mean getting a job in any of those 3?

clarify you're question.

i dont think the skills are particurably transferable but it seems like those jobs (moreso MC and IB) are about equal level in terms of prestige and exit opps so you get some people switching back and forth more than other careers like law or medicne

How much harder is it, to break into transactional services, than say I-banking or consulting? I know it's not to much easier, but at least one, who goes to a decent school like IU, should have a shot? Also Is a finance degree sufficient or do you need an accounting degree? I know on IU's website Deliotte and other Big 4's recruit the finance majors.

like i said i really dont have much experience but i think it is realtivly hard to get hired directly into ts, i think that they mostly promote audit guys after a year or two. but it is possible, i think a finance degree is fine but you are probalby better off with a double major in accounting. i would say if you graduate from iu with a decent gpa you would have a decent chance of getting a job at either an ibank, big 4 or big mc firm.

are you going to go to IU? Kelly? MBA or Undergrad?

I going to finish my last two undergrad years at IU Kelley. And what is considered a "decent GPA"?

really dont know, for banking min 3.5 but from iu you should aim for >3.75 same for MC if not higher but you could probaly get an interview with a big 4 as long as your >3.0

I think I could get a 3.5 defintely, I don't know about a 3.7. At very least if I can't get into Ibanking or Big 4 TS, I wouldn't cry if I could get a rotational at GE or something like that?

Other than GPA is there anyhting rly imporant?

Sweet, I was right all along, I always told myself that I should double major in finance and accounting.

Semba, leadership is very important. So be involved on campus is almost as important if not more important then grades. See everybody will have good grades. But, also should be noted, a lot will have leadership postions in clubs, but some won't. Also just being a memeber in the clubs isn't enough, Vice-President and President, Chair, stuff like that.

Goddammit. mssales this is like high school all over again. I was hoping to escape it, but it looks like it's going to end up another one of those 4 Club President/Captain crap all over again. Fargh.
