I really don't know if you should give such general advice for the writing section. I feel that there are different approaches to each part. I do see what you're saying, but I still think that an understanding of the concepts makes the section a lot easier.

Here's my approach:

Improving Sentences- Read the sentence. If there's a glaring error, pick the right answer and move on. If not, dissect the sentence by prep phrases. If I STILL can't find the right answer, then I dissect the question word for word. If I can't find an error, I put E. If I find an error, I read the sentence to make sure it sounds good.

Identifying errors- Read the sentence. If there's a glaring error, pick the right answer and move on. If not, analyze each of the answer choices and try to find categories under which the choices could be wrong. If there's nothing wrong, pick E.

Paragraph Improvement- This one I agree with you. Just read it and pick which ever one sounds best.

Anyways, my point is, categorizing questions is very helpful for me. If I can figure out which type of grammar mistake the question is testing I can figure it out pretty quickly. Obviously every one has different approaches to the SAT, but that's just my 2 cents.
