I just realized that the Campus Bike Shop deadline for ordering bike stuff was on August 1... oops...

Anyway, did anybody order anything through them? Did you do the wheel lock/seat lock thing, or are you taking the risk and just going with a normal lock? The reason I'm asking is because the prices really add up, what with the fenders (which I'm sure will be incredibly helpful when it rains) and the basket (do you think this is important? I'm sure a backpack would hold everything).

i just bought a bike from them. i got the U-lock that comes with their security package and i think that should be enough. i didnt get a basket because i thought it was pretty pointless. omg i really didnt think i would ever have to pay 400 dollars for a bike. i really hope it lasts a long long time

too expensive, I'll just get a cheap set of wheels from Target or something. And one of those Kryptonite U-locks. What's a fender, by the way? Last time I rode a bike was when I was 13...ah, my youth!

a current stanford student told me that target and walmart are out of bikes when orientation comes along. she said you should either order one early and have them hold it at the store or look for a used one. check craigslist.org to find some... they have some really cheap bikes there, like $40-50.

DONT buy a cheap bike. buy a comfort bike at a bike shop lol. Reallly. Research a little and find a bike that feels good if you are going to be using it. Trust me, if everything hurts after every time you ride your bike, you will regret it.
You should at least spend 250-300 dollars if the bike is good. It is worth it in the end.

I was advised by numerous people (including Stanford students and faculty) that it's wise to get the cheapest bike possible. Expensive bikes are stolen frequently, no matter how good the locks are, and even if a cheap bike is stolen, the loss isn't as much. There are plenty of comfortable cheap bikes. I just don't see why people go out of their way to spend hundreds of dollars on a flashy 21-gear mountain bike when it'll probably get stolen in a day.

^^^ because if you ever ride on a bike worth 300ish dollars, you will never be able to ride on the 50 dollar ones. plus, you dont HAVE to buy a flashy one.. there are plenty of comfortable bikes that are't flashy :) ohhh well, just my opinion..
maybe it works for you? my dad bought himself a 50 dollar bike and wont ride it. i got myself a more expensive one, and i live on it. but then again, i guess this varies for everybody.

I'm not a bike expert, but from what I've seen, expensive bikes are not necessarily the most comfortable. They're usually expensive because of high-performance capabilities, such as having 21 gears. My point is, you don't need a bike that's made for the Tour de France. The advice I've been getting is to get one that's cheap and looks downtrodden. That way, people won't be as inclined to steal it, and even if they do, it's not such a big financial loss.

omg i just realized how stupid i was. im calling to get a refund right now on my bike. ill get a cheap when i get there or call up for them to hold one for me. yeeeaaahhh now i can use that money to buy the motorola razor

i love that its soooo thin. it's a little wider than your average phone but not by much. i can't imagine having a bulky phone after this one. i just slip into my pocket and it feel like nothing. i just love it for its thinness. i mean what's $100 bucks more after 2 years (that's the contract for you right). it's as if you were paying about $1 more a week for 2 years for the razr instead of a cheap $79 phone.

ohh wow i just checked the best buy website and its only 69.99!!!!!!!!!! the thing is, is that i dont know if i can get the stanford discount on the plan. if i cant then its not worth it since i will save 6 dollars a month with stanford for the 24 months i will have it and it will be much more than the 100 dollars i saved from best buy. any idea if i can use my stanford discount at best buy?

you probably have to talk to cingular's cust. service. they say u have to buy a new plan w/ the phone 2 get a discount, but my mom added the razr as another line and still got the discount. they might make it work for u. i think its only 99 IN STORES . otherwise u gotta pay 2 somethin and do mail-in rebates.

ohh i have verizon right now so i need to get a plan anyway. so would it work in best buy if i got the plan and the phone at the same time?? sorry guys for turning a bike thread into one about phones.
