Bike and printer questions

How necessary is a printer if you are living in the dorms? Are there a lot of places where students can print things out? Also what type of bike is best for the campus? and where do you store your bike?

thanks

Neither of my kids has/had a printer. DD graduated and never owned a printer. There are lots of printing places all over campus, including the dorms. DS won’t be getting a printer. It’s not necessary.

There is not inside bike storage. There are bike racks at all of the dorms and throughout campus. Get a really good lock and register your bike at Parking Operations.

Having a printer can be convenient, but all of the dorms have labs that you can print in, as do all of the buildings. You get ~700 free pages/semester, and the pages do roll over. Yes, it’s convenient to not have to walk down to the lab at 1 am, but the free paper/toner/easy access really beats that convenience in the long term.

I personally wouldn’t bother bringing a bike unless you are super opposed to riding a bus or need it to get to an off campus job or something like that. The IU bus system is very accessible and you pay for it in your tuition, so you may as well use it. There are bus stops outside of each dorm (A for Northwest, E for Central/Eigenmann, D for Southeast) and they come regularly. You also have two feet that you can use, the campus is VERY walkable. You can get from Eigenmann to Sample Gates via bus in <15 minutes or via foot in ~30. Many of my friends brought bikes (which have to be registered) and they never moved, or they found that biking amongst the traffic was too challenging. Combine that with the winter weather that you are likely not used to and you may want to leave the bike at home

Thank you for all your helpful information. The least amount of stuff I have the better because I wont have to store it over summer.

Does anyone ride skateboards at IU?

Some people do, but not a lot. Probably will want to leave that home as well
