Is it necessary or significantly more convenient to bring your own printer?

It may be more convenient to bring your own printer but I’ve managed my whole freshman year without a printer. It’s very easy to get by without a printer if you’re willing to wake up fifteen minutes earlier to give you time to print out your paper before class. There are many places around campus where you can print— for a fee but it was cheaper for me than buying my own printer. Unless you are going to be doing a lot of printing than I wouldn’t worry about bringing your own.

Thank you, DreamingGirl. Since my daughter is traveling across the country, she’s probably going to wait and see what her needs are. She can always get one later. We’re trying to minimize how much we send.

Her major may also play a role. My D is a chem-eng major, and having her own printer saved her a ton of time. We too came from a distance and mailed it to her; carrying it on the plane wasn’t a viable option – we should have just purchased it in Ithaca. If your D is in a lot of classes that require papers, then having her own printer may be very beneficial.

It also depends where you’re living. I’m going to be in Balch, which has printers right in it in the Tatkon Center. I’m not sure of any other dorms that contain printers, but it may be worth looking into.

Quite a number us at Cornell are last minute people. And having a printer goes a long way in preventing missed deadlines for home works and lab reports. If not she might have to run to a net print center to print for a few cents per page. I found this uncomfortable for me because the computers were not always free. She might not need it as much if she’s not a Stem major as most home works are sent online.

My D is coming from across the country too and older sibs didn’t need/want one at their institutions. I think we’ll order one on Amazon if she finds she needs one.
