If you have two locks for your bike (one U-lock and one Cable lock), would this highly reduce your chances of getting your bike stolen or do these equipped bikes get stolen as well? And Does anyone or everyone wear a helmet?

Thank you.

The UT police recommend one U-lock and one cable lock, just as you mentioned. They said thieves would need two tools to get those locks off, so it makes it harder for them.

I don’t know how many people wear helmets, but my son had better! A very bright cousin of mine was hit by a car while riding his bike. He didn’t have a helmet on and has never been the same. He didn’t even go to college.

If a thief sees your bike with 2 locks, unless it’s particularly expensive or awesome, he’ll just move on to the next bike that has 1 lock on it. Easier for him, and the same payoff.

Maine,

You must get the same emails that I get, or find the data somewhere else on the internet where I find it. I would’ve said almost the exact same thing. :)

Thanks people! And I am very sorry to hear that Maine. If that isn’t motivation to wear a helmet then I don’t know what is.

Yep. Good luck with the bike. :D

Don’t bring a wonderful bike. An inexpensive bike with a U-Lock should be quite safe.
If you can wait til September 8, there will be MANY bikes available at very low prices at the UT bike auction on September 8.

The problem is that even inexpensive bikes are being stolen. The e-mail reports I get from UTPD often describe a bike as “$100 value” being taken. So I’m going to tell my son to use two locks.

Two locks and a helmet. Though people drive slow in Austin, they are f-ing idiots when it comes to what to do with a bike on the road.

LOL I can totally see them being idiots.

Yeah my bike was $88 but it looks like >$100. I might paint it to look like crap and use two locks.

Buy spray paint in an ugly color and spray it in random places, maybe. (Don’t forget to get a “bike license” registering your bike with UT)
