biking at UT?

this might be a silly question, but when i visited UT in the summer, there were bike racks all around campus, do people actually ride bikes to class, around downtown; etc?

do bicycles get stolen very often?

yes, I’ve seen plenty people bike to class. pretty much all the bike racks that you saw all around campus will be used up.

yea…people do cycle to class…and downtown. it’s more efficient than having a car on campus.
stolen bikes are the norm from what i’ve heard…but don’t they happen just about anywhere else?

SO many people ride bikes. I see them on campus more than off.
UT has the highest bike theft rate in the country. But you can prevent your bike from being stolen by locking it with a reliable U-shaped lock. They told us all about it at orientation. I don’t have a bike, but sometimes I wish I did in order to get somewhere in a hurry.

A U-lock doesn’t prevent them from being stolen tough. Sometimes people steal the seats and other parts of the bike.

I say a good 53% of the people (maybe a bit exaggerated) use Bikes. Bikes do get stolen indeed but make sure you register your bike with UTPD and get tags for it. My dorm hall’s RA got his bike stolen but luckily one our fellow residences saw the guy taking it and called UTPD.

Bike are a popular form of transportation on campus.
Furthermore Austin has a fantastic cycling subculture.
However, Austin is the #10 city for most bicycles stolen. Lock carefully, ride safely. Use two locks, a U-lock and a shielded cable. Of course, register your bicycle.
When you buy the bike ask that the quick releases be changed to bolts. This will make your bicycle less attractive to would-be thieves.

If you have a great bike at home, don’t bring it to campus. Bring a junker bike or buy one at the parking department’s annual bike auction.

Last year it was on Thurs Sept 3 from 5-9 p.m.

Use a U lock for sure.
