My D just received an email about bike rentals--do a lot of students use this service? Does it seem practical for the size of the campus?

It’s a good service if you actually want/plan to use a bike. It would certainly get you to class a little faster, but meh. Most students do not bike, the campus isn’t that big, and it’s frustrating to navigate between other students walking. Just comes down to personal preference. Some students just like biking.

We brought a bike to campus for my D and she used it once. We brought it home at the end of the year, rusty and unused. I would skip it for now. You can always do it later if your D wants one.

S wanted a bike as an early birthday gift his sophomore year. He was living in Towers and thought it would make visiting his friends who were living on Peabody easier. His dad bought the bike in our hometown and transported it to Nashville during move in week. I thought it was an ugly bright orange bike, but obviously some UT fan liked it since it was stolen in the first two weeks of school. S never again wished for a bike, so I guess it wasn’t all that essential.

naaaaah. Get involved as a freshman and then decide. ie…some people will join outdoors clubs etc. walking Vandy’s campus is part of the social fabric of life there

Nobody rides bikes.

We bought my now junior daughter a cheap fixed gear bike that’s she has used a lot for getting around. She stores it locally during the summer. It’s black and nondescript and no one has bothered it. She has a road bike that she took last year since she enjoys cycling, but the cycling club never really got off the ground. She uses zip cars for shopping trips, going to the doctor, etc. If your kid likes cycling then try it, otherwise not. And plenty of people ride bikes, judging from the numbers I saw outside her freshman dorm.
