Do many students use bikes on campus? My D wants to get a bike, but I didn't see that many bikes on campus when we visited.

I would say bikes are not uncommon, but the majority of students do not have them. The can be useful and convenient, but on a campus the size of Vanderbilt’s, certainly not absolutely necessary.

I’ve been wondering this, myself. I’m planning on taking a bike this year and seeing how things go. When I was walking about the campus I saw a few bike racks, and there were a couple students who rode past me, but bikes didn’t seem to be the method of choice for going around the campus. I suppose the main reason why I want to bring mine is so I can have a way to cheaply travel off campus as well, but I’m not sure how well Nashville accommodates cyclists.

Bikes are a convenient means about campus, but there’s a negative stigma about them with Greek life. If Greek life will play a part of your social interactions on campus, I would steer clear of them, as ridiculous as that sounds.

^ That sounds quite ridiculous, yes.
Anyone know where I can buy a cheap bike? The only bike shop I know of is on West End…they sell high-end bikes that cost at least 400 bucks.

^ Walmart, depending on just how cheap you’re willing to go.

Try Craigslist and post in the “looking for” section. In a college town, bikes change hands often. A they are subject to theft on or off campus and B college students go abroad, go home for the summers and etc and don’t want to pay for storage or don’t always have a friend to take a bike off their hands.
Vandy students are from many distant places. Bikes are sold often to students as the kids change their residences and focuses. You could probably find one after you get there used without a lot of trouble.
and it does sound ridiculous, VisionsDivine. But good for a chuckle. All biking must stop if you want a bid from a prestigious Greek organization! Great heads up! What is next, jogging? Oh well.
Vanderbilt students today are pretty rugged strong individuals. It is very hard to get into Vanderbilt. Have faith, those of you who want to go Greek and like to Bike. Ditto for those who want to go independent.
