Bike Storage at NU

Is their indoor bike storage in any of the dorms for the winter? Do a lot of students have bikes at NU?

Slivka has an indoor bike storage room in its basement. I do not know whether or not the storage room may be used by non-Slivka residents.

Even if a resident has a single, bikes may not be stored in residential rooms or residential halls if there is no storage.

A relatively high percentage of residents at Northwestern have bikes. In front of every dorm or house, there are bike racks, which are well-used. More so in the warmer months but also in the winter, bikers are found flooding the paths of NU.

Bikes are particularly useful at NU because they turn a ten or fifteen minute walk between North and South campus into less than a five minute bike ride. However, sometimes bikes aren’t as useful because of mass congestion on certain walkways. If congested, it’s hard for a biker to travel much faster than walking pace. In addition, bikes are useful for going into downtown Evanston. If a resident lives on North campus, it can take twenty or even up to thirty minutes to get to some areas of downtown. Riding a bike greatly reduces the time it takes to get into downtown Evanston.

thanks for the info. it was very helpful. his bike is a really good bike and think if its outside in bad weather it may get ruined so I was hoping more than one dorm had a bike room where it could be stored for the winter months. he has gotten conflicting info., one person told him its very good to have and another told him not to bother, he could rent one in Evanston and then not worry about it. shipping it back/forth to Evanston will also be quite costly.

I am actually going to join the Northwestern Cycling Club this year. Many of the people in the club just store their bikes in their dorms from what I’ve told (I don’t know where they fit them).

i rode my bike pretty much every day (including in the winter). i bought a pretty crappy bike from target after taking a bus there and then rode it back to campus (~8 miles).

i used it pretty frequently as most of my classes were on south campus. what i found:

a) if you’re living in a dorm, there’s really no bike storage of any kind besides the racks in front of the dorm. speaking of which, bring a lock because it will get stolen otherwise.
b) i’m a huge proponent of bikes. cuts my north-south commute by at least 10 minutes. which is 10 mins less i have to spend in the cold.
c) going into evanston is cut by 20 mins. if the main sidewalks are crowded (along sheridan) you can either ride on sheridan itself or figure out other routes (you’ll learn where/when to avoid the sidewalks).
d) you can use a really good bike but unless you can take care of it in wintry conditions (i think it snowed for the first time in like late october), you’ll see your investment corrode very quickly. salt/ice/dirt, etc ruin chains. my $110 schwinn somehow lasted the entire year with nothing but wd-40 and a set of allen wrenches. but by finals week of spring quarter, i had no brakes and my chain was rusty and i couldn’t change gears, so make of that what you will.

some of the fraternities/residential colleges permit indoor bike storage, but i wouldn’t risk it with a nice bike. northwestern does offer indoor bike storage in parkes hall (i think?) but that’s a deposit-in-december-and-you’ll-get-it-back-in-april type of thing.

Watch out for CA’s, though. The rule against storing bikes inside the dorm common areas or rooms seems to be enforced pretty well.

I appreciate the information. We were just at a local Northwestern gathering for incoming freshman and a recent graduate claimed there was bike storage inside each dorm. I don’t think he was speaking from personal experience. They also said that bike theft is rampant, especially in Evanston, and to lock it up really well and take the seat with you.
it sounds like it would be great to have and he could at least store it over a few of the winter months.

Now on to more important topics like renting or buying a fridge and are microwaves truly prohibited…

buy a fridge, microwaves aren’t prohibited.

That solve everything?
