Bike Storage

I will be living on campus next year as a freshman and I was wondering where you would store your bike on campus during the evenings. Do you always just keep in on a bike rack on campus or are there places you can put your bike? Or do you keep in in your dorm room? Also, do you even really need to bring a bike? And I plan on eventually working at or just spending a lot of time at the Res and I was wondering what the best way way to get there is. Thank you so much!

I’m not a student there yet but I talked to my cousin about this recently(he has lived in Tally his whole life, went to FSU, and currently works there) and he said that there are a lot of bike racks outside of most buildings but that bikes get vandalized A LOT. He suggested to me that I only bring my bike after I get an apartment and have room for it inside because he would never leave his bike out overnight.
Dorms are pretty small so I don’t think you’ll really have room for it there. I also don’t think you need a bike to get around because of the bus system, but again, I’m not a student there (which is also why I can’t answer anything about the Res).

Yeah, vandalism of bikes that are locked to bike racks (or dumber, not locked to the bike rack) is amazingly high. I’ve seen countless bikes ruined.

My freshman year roommate got a bike a few months in and kept it in the room. It was relatively out of the way (always on his side) so it didn’t bug me at all, but if you feel unsafe at keeping it outside you may want to contact your roommate once you find out who they are to let them know you might be keeping a bike in the room, and want to know if they would be okay with that.

I will say that bikes aren’t necessarily the best transportation option. They’re bulky. Whenever there’s a massive class let-out (so basically any time classes let out from about 10am to 4pm), the Legacy Walk walkway in the middle of campus will be crowded, making riding a bike difficult at best. You kind of become a jerk if you’re riding a bike in a crowd, to be blunt. Walking doesn’t take much more time than riding a bike and you don’t have to worry about whether there’s a spot at the close bike rack for you. I’m not saying don’t bring the bike, but you will probably want to take a few days to feel things out about whether a bike is helpful or not.

The easiest way to get to the Rez is driving, since it’s a few miles from campus, but there are usually buses or shuttles that are running to and from the Rez. If you’re planning on working there though a car is probably going to be the best- you never know what time you’d work and whether any shuttles would even be running. If you won’t have a car I’d probably put off thinking about working for now (though I do recommend still talking to people at the Rez about it. You never know, there’s probably plenty of people without a car that work there. You might be able to bike there but traffic along some of the roads would be a huge concern to me.
