If I bring a bike, will I be able to keep it locked up to a bike rack until winter? I'm on a tight budget so I would rather not pay for a locker. I can just use a trash bag or something to keep the rain from rusting it. My main concern is about the university's rule against using bike racks on a long term basis. Is it strictly enforced? If it comes down to it, I could just say I didn't know about the rule.

I just realized, is the rule for people who lock their bikes up and never use them? Because I plan to use mine for getting to classes.

idk
when i was there for orientation i saw a lot of bikes missing wheels, seats, etc.
so it might not be that safe.

maybe you should just bring a really cheap bike. walking isnt that hard anyways.

but i bet you'd be on the luckier side if your bike was left 'unsupervised' in broad daylight with lots of people outside, as opposed to the evenings or later.

You can definitely just keep your bike on the bike rack at your dorm all semester. One of my friends went as far as removing his front wheel and bringing it up to his room so the bike wouldn't be worth stealing, but he used his bike for occasional long recreational rides instead of short, frequent trips to class. Just make sure that you register your bike with the city. I believe this can be done for free at Festifall, and is something like $5-15 in general.

Lock your bike up correctly, by putting the lock through the front wheel, frame, and rack, and you'll have nothing to worry about.

Michigan weather is pretty harsh for bikes. Depending on your bike, and the space in your dorm room, you might want to even consider storing it inside. I saw quite a few expensive bikes sitting outside of South Quad last winter with expensive components and bearings turning to rust.

I think I'll just bring my bike from midde school then. It's a little small, but I'll be able to maneuver around people better, haha. I don't need to be worrying about a bike all semester.
