How convenient are they on campus?

How safe (as in preventing from being stolen) are they on campus, and how should I secure them?

Unrelated: how popular are mopeds? I saw at least 5 just on a random weekend in mid-may. I would never get one, way out of my budget range anyway, just curious.

I’d say pretty convenient, since you can’t drive. I’m thinking about bringing one for this fall since I’m always last minute to my classes and need something faster. It’s just another thing to have though…walking is just as well.

Since it’s in atlanta/college I’d get the safest possible lock.

Probably a little less popular than bikes

To be honest I always found a bike more of a burden than anything and just walked everywhere. Tech is not that large.

A walk to howey physics from north ave takes ~15 min. A bike would be more convenient for that in my opinion. That’s theoretically though, I wouldn’t know because I haven’t had a bike here yet.

It mostly comes down to a matter of personal preference.

I agree it’s probably down to how much you like to walk. Because the Trolley doesn’t run that often right now, I’ve just been walking from Midtown Station to Van Leer where I work and it hasn’t been too bad; oftentimes I can beat the Trolley.

I’ll be living on the west side, btw. I’m a freshman, so I’m quite noobish to this: how often are you able to walk to classes with friends? I’d rather walk with friends than speed around on my bike.

it depends on if any of your friends are in the same classes or if your friends leave the same time. there is a good chance there are a handful of freshman on west side going to the same freshman classes as you.

Alright, I think i’ll hold off on getting a bike for a semester or so.

How’s security regarding bikes? Are they stolen often? Can they be locked up inside buildings?

don’t know how often they are stolen, but a good lock to be safe. Poor college kids/near a city with wandering hobos=chance of stolen items.

can’t bring them inside school buildings, but most buildings have bike racks outside to lock them up.

First of all, I wouldn’t bring a good bike - no $5000 road bike or anything like that. Second, as Darko mentioned, get a decent lock. Bikes are stolen on campus, but it’s almost always someone that forgot to lock it up, or someone that locked it up to something not secure (e.g. I once saw a bike chained to a poll that was 5’ tall).

You can register the bike with GT PD, but in reality, buying a bike that doesn’t stand out and using common sense will prevent theft.

As for bringing them in door, I’ve seen some students chain up their bikes in stairwells in dorms and academic buildings. I don’t think you’re supposed to do that, but unless you’re blocking walking traffic, no one will care.
