Binghamton Class of 2024 Thread

My son has a 1230 SAT and a has an UW 99.8 GPA, he is a D1 in pole vaulting took 15 AP’s, rank: 2/4,313. He already got his acceptance letter in the mail in November I think the 25th. Really not that excited because binghamton isn’t really up to par with his standards. Just because they have a single noble peace prize winner doesn’t mean they’re all that. Btw, it’s just a safety school since we applied to 3 other IV’s, so far we’re 12/12 in college acceptance. Regardless, hope your child gets in, and best of luck since looking at his scores they really aren’t the best not gonna lie. But good luck!

@countrystrong12

Very insightful, thank you.

@avahelen - I am in the same boat as you…waiting for my daughter to hear about CCPA.

I see a lot of parents here:) Do the kids care? My son didn’t check the status at all till he got an email yesterday. He told me then went back to whatever he was doing.

@amyny2002 I agree, I’d venture to guess that these forums are mostly parents (but I have seen commentary from students). The kids do care. I think they are a little less obsessed than their parents. :slight_smile:

It is probably not entirely by the region/school. For example, at our HS some kids have already been accepted, others (including my son) are still waiting.
If I were to formulate another “theory”: they start out admitting those students whose scores/grades are (1) above a certain threshold, and (2) “consistent” between SAT and GPA. What that “consistency” means you can see from the Naviance scatter plots: there is a VERY STRONG correlation between SAT and GPA. Strong deviations from that trend line is a red flag for the school.
For example, somebody who has a very high GPA but a very low SAT score could be labelled as a “plodder” who will have difficulties with college-level work. At the other end you find kids who are scoring extremely high, yet their GPAs are low. Those are likely to be labelled as “slackers” who won’t put in the time to do their work. Obviously, there could be extenuating explanations for both categories. The “plodders” could just be anxious at test-taking. The “slackers” could be bored out of their minds at their HS. But still, why take the chance on those?
Anyway, congratulations to all those who got in! Those who have not: we are all in the same boat, let’s keep waiting!

student here in the midsts of parents, I loved Binghamton more than anything, but my parents could care less, nice to see the supportive parents though

waiting waiting for two kids… congrats to all who were accepted!!

Gonna render a guess here.

I’d assume the reason why they release high GPA/test score candidates first is they know they aren’t these students’ only school and want to see how many accept promptly which gives them a sense of class yield.

For those who haven’t heard yet, my DS included, if the numbers are where they need to be, you’ve done all that you can do. The school notes they will let candidates know by Jan 15. We’re still a month out.

Keep the faith.

@jvitale
No, you shouldn’t. Your stats are impressive.

Student here! Definitely seeing more parents than kids here but some of us also can’t bear the obsessive portal checking. I honestly have no idea how my friends are so calm about admissions compared to me.

Most of our children will be accepted either before January 15th or in regular decision, if their metrics are within range. If not, it’s not the end of the world. Just make sure you have a backup plan. I’ve realized that the only purpose this blog really serves is to fuel everyone’s anxieties.

Yes, there is a very clear logic for the school to do just that. What is less clear to me: why would they not wait for the ED date? That’s just a week away for most schools, and it’s actually this week for the Ivies. The only reason that I can see for a student to “quickly accept” is if they are rejected by their ED choice, and don’t want to wreck their holiday season with additional college apps.

I also see quite a few solid/“consistent” SAT/GPA combos that have been already accepted, and a few skewed combos that have not been. The latter one are either viewed as unlikely to accept quickly. Or, possibly, not even likely to succeed… I can see some logic in both arguments. Unweighted A+'s or 1600 scorers are probably likely to dip their toes into prestigious schools for the RD admissions. It is also unlikely that A+/1600s will apply to Bing. Which leaves them with a more balanced set (A/1500) that would be less likely to trade their vacation time for highly uncertain admissions to super-duper schools.

My daughter recently received her decision. We anxiously waited to see if the years of SAT tutoring and intellectually stimulating programs prevailed. Received a full ride. We are so proud of our little girl!!
