My daughter applied to Decker, but was offered Harper with guaranteed transfer to Decker in fall 2021 if she meets similar requirements as what your son was offered. I called admission office and they said if she accepts it’s non binding, she still has time to weigh her options with the other schools she has applied to. I don’t know if this is something new they are doing this year, or if they do this every year. I was very skeptical when I read the email, but I think it’s legit.
Just checked portal was accepted into Harpur!
GPA: 91
SAT: 1440 (640 English, 800 Math)
SAT Bio: 800
Some APs
Ranking: N/A
Thank you @oosnjmom ! It’s wonderful that you have personally called the Admissions Office to get clarification.
I somewhat recall reading similar “alternative admission” results from Class of 2023 thread. Maybe I should take one more look into the old thread.
I don’t dare to ask… what would happen if my son does not take the option? Will he get rejected then…?
any decisions coming out friday? curious when decisions are typically released…
Please let me know if you find that thread, I am going to look for it as well…
You could always reach out to the school as well, it can’t hurt.
My biggest concern about this option is I am not sure if this means that she will have to go to Binghamton for 5 years instead of 4, or will all the classes that she has to take the first year be towards her degree in nursing.
A lot of questions we will need to get answered…
Notifications have typically been Tuesday through Thursday, I’ve yet to learn of a Friday release but… this late in the cycle, with such limited time before the 15th… ?♀️
Congrats! Sounds like a great option!
Would you mind sharing your Ds stats? We haven’t heard yet.
@CollegeMom202x
I got this 3 years ago. This means that you are admitted into Harpur first. After your son has completed the pre-req (Macro, Micro, Stats, and Calculus) with a good gpa (3.5 and higher preferably), you apply for intra-transfer. It is suggested that you get them done through AP credits or college credit. Make sure your overall GPA is high. I intra-transfer with a 3.8 and had only Calc and Micro done in high school and did Macro and stats at bing. Also, it is non-binding (you don’t have to go to Binghamton). Hope it clarifies!
Thanks @manward !
Here are the stats:
Application Type: EA
In-State
Applied for SOM
Offered to Harpur (with option to transfer)
Major: Business Administration
SAT: 1520 (800 Math / 720 EBRW)
SAT2: 800 Math 2 / 790 Chemistry / 770 Biology (E)
Unweighted GPA: 3.7
DS admitted to Watson, ME, 33 ACT, Many AP’s including Physics, Chem. Jazz Band, Eagle Scout (over 1000 hours cs) In top 10% Small HS 200 ppl in grad class.
Thank you so much for your clarification @brandonlikc ! And your successful intra-transfer is inspiring.
My son is taking AP Calculus AB now, probably that’s why the message he received only lists out the other 3 pre-req’s.
Getting back to @oosnjmom … actually I read that thread outside of CC… tried to post the link before but “under review”. (Lesson learned)
I don’t believe in “taking an extra year” because there are some general education classes that all students need to take, regardless of the majors.
@c3memed Congratulations! I am so happy for you! If you have any questions about the school, dorms, or anything else, please feel free to reach out. Best of luck in this next chapter!
@oosnjmom You don’t have to worry! I would suggest for your kid to go to advising for Nursing, assuming your kid attend Binghamton, to make sure he/she is on track. I would suggest that your kid take all the general requirement and finish it asap. Having AP and college credit helps to get some gen ed done before entering college. Also, there is a pdf online of a traditional BS nursing (includes every course needed to graduate). Also, having a 3.5+ higher helps the case. Hope this helps!
My brother just heard back a little while ago.
Deferred 1210 SAT 96 UW 2 College courses EC’s are dirt biking, played soccer, dives on the school varsity team for 5 years. Is a triplet, wrote his CE on that too.
Now he came into my room and told me that Bing decisions were out, I checked my phone and mine wasn’t there. I guess they don’t send siblings at the same time lmao. I’ve just been waiting a very long time which is getting me annoyed.
I wrote my CE and have plenty EC’s based off of leadership, do colleges really like that more than anything? Anyways just curious and wanted to let y’all know what happened. Thanks
@iCow024 For SUNY, I think that college essays don’t weigh as much as grades and SAT/ACT to be honest. It does for top universities that are more selective. It is the sad reality. There are always outliers, of course, where someone with a 1200 range can get in but someone with a 1300 can get a spring admit or deferred. I know this is the case for Stony Brook and Binghamton since they are the most selective. If you are in-state, you will be compared to your grade in your school, so it is vital that the #s are high. In general, if you get BAP or spring offer, it is not the worse case. It is what you make of it. Hope this clarifies.
I just received the email for Bing to re-review my application for Harpur instead of SOM. Does this mean I will get my results before the deadline

Wow. With those stats any college should be honored to have him. SOM offers must’ve been filled up thats why they offered Harpur instead and makes you wonder if you applied earlier then he would have gotten into SOM directly. Good Luck!
May I ask her grades and such? My son was deferred tonight from SOM and not offered anything else…he is 37th in his graduating class of 374 students…1300 SAT…30 ACT…96 average…nine college credits…a little community service. It’s frustrating because I see kids getting in with lower grades than him. I’d hate for him to wait until April 1 only to be rejected. I wonder if he switches to applying Harper and then switches if he has a better chance? My daughter is there now in the accelerated nursing program
@ collegemom202x
My son received the same exact email tonight! We just assumed that it was a non binding acceptance into Harpur and signed the form right away. What is confusing to me is what the word “guaranteed” actually means…is that a guaranteed ability to transfer if the first -year requirements are met? (I read in another forum that transfers from harpur to SOM are difficult!)
@borgdoctor
I think there are several factors…
- Submitted application on Oct. 20 (not early enough)
- In-State applicant (bigger pool of competition)
- 3.7 unweighted GPA A- or 90~92
- Competition in the same high school (75% students in his grade applied for Binghamton)
- His stats mostly emphasized his strengths in STEM, instead of business/finance (may be considered not the good fit)
