Is The Source program a gimmick? We got the fancy folder but it seems like so many are receiving it that it doesnt seem as selective as it appears.
@silverpurple I have the same question. The material does state that they only accept a max of 25 students per “stream”. Six streams means a max of 150 students.
I’m wondering if they have multiple classes of 25 kids each. For ex., fill up 10 classes of 25 kids each for each of the 6 streams. It is not that important to me and my daughter. Doesnt really make a difference one way or another whether she will go there so we havent bothered to phone the college to inquire.
I am getting concerned that we haven’t heard and my daughter applied on November 19th. Others with similar stats or lower applied later and have heard back and got accepted and all applied RD. My daughter is 4.00 plus GPA, 1340 SAT and a great resume. she is applying to Harper for Neuroscience. I called yesterday and the girl on the phone looked at my daughter’s application materials to make sure everything was in and they are. Any insight? I read everyone getting accepted to honors etc and I am afraid all the spots will be gone by the time she gets accepted.
Sorry you haven’t heard yet. We applied early action and we’re deferred to regular decision and have not heard since. We are having the same concerns as you. Good luck to us all who are still waiting.
I have similar stats, also applied a while ago, and am still waiting as well. It’s really worrying me.

Assuming a freshman class size of 3000 students. According to the above link but probably generalized - 10 research streams with around 30 students each stream for a total size of about 300 students although in Watson for both research streams specifically there is a limit of 45 students [30 in IAS and 15 in Clean energy] but lets just assume that they will take a total of 300 students. That means about 10% of the incoming freshman are doing research.
Out of the 33,467 who applied, 13507 were admitted (40% acceptance rate) and I will also assume that they will probably give out 1500 of these research invitations to achieve the 300 students goal to fill up the research program.
I think 1500 out of 13507 acceptance letters is pretty selective “n’est pas”?
@pventrello My son applied early decision on oct 29th to Harpur with similar stats: 30 ACT and 94 average. He was deferred to regular decision pool and hasn’t heard anything since. Other kids in his grade were accepted with the same or lower stats.
He has come to terms with the fact that he will most likely not get a decision until the end of March.
DS was invited into both Scholars and FRI last week. He and we (parents) do not feel pressure to commit sooner than he’s comfortable doing so. Yes, the program is limited but BU knows what they’re doing numbers-wise. They will offer to a much higher number of kids than the cut-off because they know their general acceptance rates for that caliber of kid/college/major/OOS vs in-state/etc. That being said, we are confident if DS makes his decision to accept on April 30th and he’s #55 on the list, he’s not getting shut out from the listed cut-off of 50. But if he’s #125 to accept … its likely not going to be possible.
DD is currently a freshman at BU. We cannot rave more about her program, advising, classes, and overall experiences. She is not part of Scholars or FRI but her roommate and friends are members of one or both. She highly recommends accepting the invitations although the chatter among her group is Scholars is TOUGH to stay qualified for all four years and very demanding (and rightly so). She’s a PPL major in Harpur, part of an LLC, and doing excellent on all fronts.
anyone hear back from bing rd? stats please ?
Really weird question- but has anyone else received a hand written letter from their admissions counselor congratulating them on their acceptance? I haven’t seen anything like it before and wanted to know if anyone else received a similar card as well.
@hosbrook41 Would be happy for you to share
Sure! They told me that the Scholars is BU’s one of their Honors Program, as is the FRI and Source programs. If they got an invite to more than one, they would all be in the same invite.
Anyone know when BU sends out their merit awards?
@hosbrook41 Binghamton doesn’t give out merit aid for instate NY students but a school like RPI with your daughter’s stats should get the RPI Medal Award $30,000 which brings the cost down to around $40,000 so Bing without merit aid would still be cheaper.
@ChristinaP252 can u tell us more about ppl? That is my daughter’s intended major. What are the size of classes? Does one have problems getting into the class of their choice? Does one have intern opportunities? I assume one comes home or to places other than Binghamton to do internships maybe in the summer? Or what opportunities are there in Binghamton?
Still waiting for RD decision, sent in Dec. anyone else hear anything?
Daughter got RD acceptance today
Daughter got her RD acceptance yesterday into Harper and major Neuroscience.
Could you guys post accept students starts?
@silverpurple - I can’t really answer your question about class size. Since they take classes in many disciplines for the major and she’s just a freshman they range in size. A philosophy class last semester was a giant lecture of about 125 as is a history class this semester. They’re basic gen eds outside the major so there’s students of all ages included. DD has no problem getting into classes this semester. She did go in with a number of AP credits which will allow early graduation by about a year but she’s planning on using that time to focus on a 2nd major & a minor. Her advising has been phenomenal. With regard to internships, she’s not at that point yet. Her plan this summer is to volunteer in a law firm & continue her regular job. She does feel she’ll be working with her advisors in the fall to develop internship opportunities.
I strongly encourage your daughter to attend Accepted Students Day in April. It is well-run and there are breakouts for each college, major, pre-law, Scholars, FRI, LLCs, etc. It made the difference for my daughter last year. Conversely, it made the opposite difference for a friend she’d made who was weighing different schools & he chose another school. Either way, you can ver those questions much better answered & a feel if Bing is right for her.
