Binghamton Class of 2024 Thread

My daughter has applied for NYS STEM, but have not heard anything yet. Any idea when they will contact the applicants? she is definitely in the top 10% of her class, but they dont officially rank the students, wonder how that will work for her school. Perhaps they will let the NYS STEM people know her standing.

If she gets it we would have to take the chance. If she leaves NY after graduation then we would have to pay it back.

Don’t you have to tell them which college you’re going when she applied for NY STEM? Has she admitted to any SUNY colleges yet?

She has indicated all the NY colleges she has applied to in the NYS Stem scholarship application, but she applied for the scholarship only recently. I am assuming that the STEM scholarship approval is separate from the admissions process and that if you get the scholarship nwhen you commit to a NY college indicated in the application the STEM scholarship will be directly paid to them towards tuition. She applied to 4 universities in NY, Binghamton, Stoney Brook, Geneseo and Cornell. She was accepted in Binghamton and Stoney Brook with Stoney Brook giving her a $4000 per year scholarship. No scholarships from Binghamton and have not heard about admission from either Geneseo or Cornell.

Our daughter was accepted into Bing for Biomedical Engineering back in December. She is in state. Last night she received her FA letter from Bing. We were disappointed as they didn’t offer her a merit scholarship but this was the whisper that we have heard for in state students. There was an Excelsior Scholarship line item on her BIng FA statement based upon our FAFSA AGI data, they maxed her out on 1st year Fed loans, offered a $2000 Work Study with us filling the rest between her/our EFC and the remaining balance. We also have an older son at a highly ranked private NYS university so there will be a two year “overlap” with two of our kids both in school.

She was also accepted into UB for BME and into their Honors College back in November. UB recently sent her a merit award letter with not one, but two merit scholarships totaling $8000 a year that can be used on things other than tuition. So between UB’s extremely generous merit scholarships and Excelsior stacked, it looks like UB will be her choice. SUNY University Centers (UB, Bing, Stony Brook) are all ABET certified for engineering programs. Saving an additional $32,000 over 4 years for a BS degree for her/us is a no brainer that can be used to cover the cost a full year of grad school in a 4+1 BS/MS program. Sorry Bing.

@huntyraws1 we are UB bound what were the two merit scholarships? we have not received the FA yet. Know we got $12,000 so far. Crossing our fingers for the Presidental.

chickmate3 - It was Pride of NY and SEAS Women’s Empowerment for engineering that were for non tuition purposes (room, board, fees) I wish your student the best!

President’s Promise Schlp - 3,000.00
TAP - 4,358.00
Pell - 6,345.00
SUNY Tuition Credit - 2,021.00

15,724.00 - Total Grants and Scholarships/Awards (No repayment required)

(net cost with work study comes out to be $9,000)

still waiting for Excelsior as well

Is this generally a fair offer from Binghamton? im in state.
Also Is the presidents thing a merit based award? Anyone else receive this from Bing?

Not my kid, but another in-state student also received the $3K President’s Promise Scholarship. Assuming she will need to achieve a minimum GPA in order to continue receiving that scholarship year by year.

On the other hand, what is “SUNY Tuition Credit”?

According to the BING FAQ, →

SUNY Tuition Credit Award: supplemental award calculated by NYS Higher Education Services Corp. (HESC) based on your NYS Tuition Assistance Program (TAP) award. Therefore, you must be TAP eligible to receive this award. This award will be available for credit toward the bill once a student’s TAP award status listed in BU BRAIN is “Confirmed by NYS Agency.”

Thanks @mikezv

I am a current high school student living in the Binghamton area. I take classes at Binghamton during the school day. If you have any questions about the area or the school fire away. I applied to SOM and got into the PwC Scholars Program.

@blueskyreal what is going to high school like in Binghamton? Do a lot of your classmates end up at Binghamton or Broome County CC or do they end up going away to college? After college do you or your friends want to stay in Binghamton area or do most of them end up relocating in other parts of the country? What do you guys do for fun on the weekends when you are not in school?

@borgdoctor The high school I go to is one of the best in the area. It has a high reputation of always sending kids to T20. Out of the graduating class size of 250 last year, around 5 went to Cornell, 28 went to Binghamton, 15 to Buffalo, and 87 to Broome CC. There were a couple of kids that went to other schools like Stanford, UPenn, etc. A lot of students surprisingly choose Buffalo over Bing because they just want to get out of the area. The general consensus at my high school is if I didn’t live so close to the University, I would go to Bing because it’s an amazing school but just too close to home. The one thing that sucks living in Binghamton is there is nothing to do. There are always parties going on, especially at the university, but outside of that, there isn’t much. However, take my words with a grain of salt because I’ve lived here my whole life. But without considering the location, Binghamton is definitely a great school. The Engineering and Management school have amazing reputations of sending kids to work for Google, Tesla, Amazon, JP Morgan, Morgan Stanley, etc. Hope this helps

anyone’s bottom of the portal disappear ?

Did yours?

A week ago(2-18-20), my Daughter was ACCEPTED to Bing!!
She now has her three SUNY’s (Stony Brook and New Paltz-$5,000/yr Presidential Scholarship) and several private schools (all with large Merit Scholarships and Honors Programs)!!
Decision time. ~Good luck everyone!!

@Millieblue9 , your daughter is instate and received a 10k scholarship at Bing? I thought Bing didn’t give scholarships to NY state residents. Are you talking about financial aid or grants? Just curious.

@Lindagaf Not at Bing at UB (University of Buffalo). She did not receive any merit from Bing. Waiting on possible merit at Geneseo and also waiting to see what SU comes back with as well before she decides. Heart was set on Bing but now second guessing. Stressful process for sure.

Decision time for us as well. Just want this to be over with. Got large scholarships from Rutgers and Buffalo. My heart was set on stony brook but my son really likes Binghamton Watson and instate tuition plus housing $27,000 is easily affordable with no loans so
might be Go Bearcats!
