So after visiting Binghamton University, I fell in love with campus, food, and dorms. I know that stony brook is known more for biology, but I really wasn’t thrilled with the campus and stony brook gave me a half scholarship. So where should I go? Does anyone go to either of these schools and could provide input? I tried Bing’s food but not Stony’s. Is the food at stony brook as bad as what everyone says?
Personally, I would choose Stony Brook, especially with the half scholarship. While both are similarly ranked and similar in reputation within New York and the North East, I believe Stony Brook has a much larger national and global reputation. However, if you like Binghamton over Stony Brook then go there. Ultimately it is up to you, but personally, ceteris paribus, I would choose Stony Brook over Binghamton. The schools are very very similar, and I do not know if money plays into your decision, but a half scholarship to Stony Brook is really nice.
Congrats on your acceptances, both schools are great schools, and I am sure you will succeed at either.
Can you afford Binghamton without any hardship or loans?
yes
Well if you love Binghamton and it is affordable, I’d go there.
It depends what you are looking for in a college.
Both will be great academically. Stony Brook has the medical school and hospital right on campus, but biology is a popular major at Bing, too.
- Want community? Pick Bing. Binghamton has more of a campus community. I grew up near Stony Brook. Many, many students are commuters, who live within ninety minutes of the school.
- Want access to NYC? Pick Stony Brook. Approx hour and a half train ride from station right on campus.
- Want to walk to classes? Pick Bing. Stony Brook has buses to get you to class.
- Want a charming local town? Stony Brook and Setauket are historic and charming villages that beat Binghamton and Vestal.
My son is looking only at Binghamton, because he wants a campus community. But others might prefer Stony Brook for some of the reasons listed above.
Stony Brook grad here, and all I can say is, yes, it’s an ugly campus, but you’ll get a better education, especially in the natural sciences.
