Satisfied recruiters are keys behind Binghamton University's climb up the ladder of elite business schools, administrators said Sunday.

BU's School of Management ranked 40th overall in Business Week's annual ranking of top undergraduate programs. It was 15th among public schools.

Binghamton improved from an overall a ranking of 74 last year and rated higher than many larger and more established programs, including business schools at Syracuse University, Boston University, Mary-land and Purdue, according to the Business Week survey, released late last week.

While receiving a C in teaching quality and a B in facilities and services, BU proved to be a strong favorite among business recruiters, ranking 11th out of all the schools.

Upinder Dhillon, dean of BU's School of Management, cited the success the school has in meeting the needs of employers looking for qualified workers.

"Recruiters really like our students," Dhillon said, noting the school added a placement director last year to draw top recruiters, including Goldman Sachs, to Binghamton.

Binghamton University President Lois B. DeFleur said BU's showing was especially impressive because "it compares very favorably against much more longstanding programs."
