Binghamton Uni to Stony Brook for Digital Art?

I am on a break from Binghamton University because I do not know what major to commit to. Since my withdrawal I’ve researched different design occupations currently existing, such as digital media and user experience design. I’ve deliberately avoided design before because I thought design was equal to fine arts, but I’m well aware now that the practice of design and art is not the same.

I’m willing to go back to Binghamton University but the studio art major there is largely traditional. Though I don’t hate traditional art, there’s no design concentration besides graphic design, which I’m not interested in studying. I don’t want any other major, and just taking on any other major is not a valuable way to spend my time and energy.

I’ve been looking for other digital design/art programs in New York that aren't in art schools, and I discovered Stony Brook had digital art. The program is clearly more geared to what I want, but I still don’t feel convinced. I know Stony is popular for science. I also hear some negative things about campus life compared to Binghamton. Do you think it’s worth transferring? Is there another school you know of that has what I’m interested in?

Did you research programs at FIT, SUNY New Paltz, and SUNY Purchase?

lily, SBU has a Digital Arts Minor, and as I understand it, the students are from various majors, like Studio Arts, but also Computer Science, so it’s a mix of people and skills. I’d say a program like that would greatly benefit Design/Art people, because 1) the SBU CS department is top-notch, so those students get to interact/compete/collaborate with smart, driven people, and 2) CS projects are always looking for art people to collaborate on Web sites, games (see [Stony Brook University Game Programming Competition - Results Page](Stony Brook University Game Programming Competition) ), and other stuff, and the CS department is big and has lots of various projects. Look at cDACT as well: [cDACT | consortium for Digital Arts, Culture, and Techonology](http://emedia.art.sunysb.edu/cDACT/)

I’ve decided to apply to stony brook for studio art but I’m still gathering info on stony’s art program and searching for other schools. I’m looking for views on the overall art department, preferably from those currently concentrating on digital art classes in the studio art major. I don’t know how I’d find this info though. Any suggestions?

Slickphilly, I’d definitely look forward to working with CS students if I get the chance. The digital art minor is what first attracted me to stony brook, and it was a pleasant surprise. CS is strong in Stony so taking on digital art as a minor sounds like an excellent choice, but can that be said for those working on an art major? I’ve looked at the art department’s website and found course descriptions, but it’s still unclear what work students are focusing on, and whether or not the program and alumni are substantial for students interested in gaining experience in the digital design field.
