I've been reading posts and found them to be very helpful Thank you to those who contribute. My son has been accepted to both Bing & Gen. His primary interests are creative writing/screenwriting/playwriting. Does anyone have any advice as to which school would be better for this field of study?

While Geneseo is a very good school, Binghamton I think would suit your son a whole lot better. Geneseo is not strongly focused on any of the arts or creative areas, much more focused on Math and science. Binghamton however is known for an incredibly strong liberal arts program.

It is true that Geneseo over the years has been getting alot of attention for having strong Math, Physics, Bio and Chem departments and more recently the business department, but the foundation of a Geneseo education is built from the liberal arts and it is the strong liberal arts eduation that Geneseo truly prides itself on.

All Geneseo graduates must complete the Humanities sequence which is the foundation of the core liberal arts education at Geneseo.

The two courses which make up the Humanities requirement approach the subject of moral and political values using the methods of the three Humanities disciplines: literature, history, and philosophy. The goal of these courses is to acquaint students with the major Western value systems by examining the basic readings from philosophical and literary points of view, and in a historical context.

While Geneseo may not necessary be the strongest school for music and theatre, the programs are decent but there are better options among the SUNY schools, they most certainly provide one of the best if not the best liberal arts education for the dollar.

The English department which houses the creating writing program is one of the stronger departments at Geneseo.

I would recommend that your son speak to current students in the program or try to reach out to alumni.

He has two great options!!! Congrats!

Thank you for your help. The Binghamton tour made no mention of the english department and left us with the feeling that it’s schools of management and nursing were its biggest assets. A shame if it’s actually not true. Our son is leaning toward Geneseo largely for this reason and due to the size of the school.

wrtrsmom - this is another really good place to see comments from current students and alumni.
