Binghamton VS. New Paltz

Hello all,

So I was recently accepted to both Binghamton and New Paltz as a transfer. I am very excited. I intend on majoring in international Relations, or Political science with a specialization in Global and international affairs (binghamton.)

I am definitely going to grad school, though I don't know what for yet. I'm contemplating further pursuing international relations.
I am also thinking about public health, or going to medical school.

I would like to eventually work in some sort of Humanitarian work, maybe for World Bank.

We'll see. I'd like to gauge at college whether or not I'm Med School material, because that would be the best case scenario for me.

I was originally intending on attending a private school located in a major Northeastern City.

I applied to Fordham, NYU, BU, Northeastern, Syracuse, and George Washington U.

I was accepted to Syracuse so far, and am waiting to hear back from the rest of my schools. George Washington U was my top choice.

I am realizing though... unless I am offered a great deal of cash, its not worth it for me to attend a private school when I have great SUNY options on my plate. Especially when I'm definitely attending grad school. Money is a huge issue for me.

I'm waiting to hear back from these other schools, but realistically I'll be attending a SUNY school.
The problem for me is deciding which one to attend.
I live near SUNY New Paltz (poughkeepsie area) and enjoy the town. But it is very close.

Binghamton is very far and I have no idea what the social scene is like. Is the college very diverse? I definitely won't be joining a frat and am hoping for a good music/theater scene.

I was a Acting major before I decided to transfer.

Sorry for the length of this post... I have a lot to say

Thanks!

Since you are already familiar with New Paltz, I suggest you visit Binghamton. From what I hear, they are very different schools and I’m sure you will get a sense of where you feel comfortable after visiting.

new paltz and binghamton are very different so visiting both is important.

theater at binghamton is very good – and in addition to the university wide theater, some of the residential colleges put on productions during the year. i am not personally involved, but i have heard good things about both the theater programs and the music programs.

here is info on the anderson center on campus – [Binghamton University - Anderson Center: About the Anderson Center/url. here is a listing of campus performance groups (ie student organizations, not formal theater program) [url=Login]PAWS - Powered by CollegiateLink](http://www2.binghamton.edu/anderson-center/about-the-anderson-center.html)

in terms of diversity, it depends on what type of diversity you mean. there are a LOT of students from the NYC metro area at binghamton. but other than that, i think its pretty diverse. if you look at the link i gave you above with the list of performance groups, you can change the catergory at the top to look at cultural or religious groups – that may give you an idea of the diversity of groups on campus (you can’t tell from this listing how “active” any of these groups may be.)

binghamton is a university center – and even though it is the smallest of the 4 university centers in SUNY, it is still a lot bigger than new paltz and will have a different feel. no one would accuse binghamton of being a major northeast city – or even being that near to one. each offers excellent opportunities. only you can tell which is a better fit.
