Hey all,

I got into both SUNY Binghamton and Syracuse as a transfer. I'll be entering Fall 2010 as a sophomore. I am planning on going to medical school.
I applied as an international relations major (political science with a concentration in Global and International Affairs for Binghamton) but might switch to another social science like anthropology or history.
I'm also thinking about religious studies. I might minor in a hard science... but after doing some research I think its better to be a well-rounded medical school applicant.
Plus... I'm incredibly interested in all of those fields of study.

I have not received my financial aid package from Syracuse yet but was accepted last year for Acting and received a "decent" financial package. I'm hoping that my change in major will get me more money because art majors are notorious for receiving very little FA from most Institutions.

Binghamton doesn't really give out much money so I'm not expecting a lot, but I am a NY state resident.

I know, according to US News, Binghamton is rated 80th in the nation and Syracuse U is rated 54th.
I'm wondering... Is it worth spending the extra cash on Syracuse?
They are both great schools... will a Syracuse education better my chances of getting into Medical School?

It should cost me, overall, an extra 60 to 75 thousand more to go to Syracuse. Because of an injury during my childhood, a Binghamton education would basically be paid for.

Thanks so much,

Nick

IMO—Binghamton is a good choice for you. With your intended major, grad school is probably in your future. I would go to Binghamton for undergrad. You will be able to get a solid foundation onto which you can build your graduate studies. Save the money on your undergraduate. Binghamton is a very good school so you are not sacrificing quality for price. Your graduate school program will be more relevant in your field of study than where you went to undergraduate school.

Thanks for the advice… That is very helpful!
It’s good to have someone confirm my thought… I think now, they only way I’ll attend a Private Institution is if I’m rewarded with a substantial financial package.

Though its definitely a reach, my top choice was George Washington University… because the Elliot School of International Affairs is very competitive and renowned. The school is in close proximity to World Bank… and obviously its location in D.C. is very desirable for a student in International Relations.
I’m hoping to get accepted and get a lot of Financial Aid from them. I’m not going to count on it though, in fear of being disappointed.
I’m glad I have such a good option with Binghamton University… really takes a load off my back.

I’lll just wait anxiously for my FA package from Syracuse!!!

Binghamton is a good school but it wouldn’t set you up for grad school as much as Syracuse would. Financially, Binghamton would be better since med school is a ton of money.

Finances = Bingo

If you really want an edge for med school = Syracuse

Well… I’m really hoping for a competitive Financial package from Syracuse…
I have pretty grandiose dreams for my education and my future career…

and to realize my dreams I’m going to need the best education possible…

does anyone know if its possible to take journalism classes in New House? Can you apply to take classes, or a pick up a minor? Would it be too late to do this entering as a sophomore… I assume you’d at least have to go through a semester of SU academics before applying…

I’m very interested in journalism… but I stress the study of my disciplines more than the art of Journalism itself…

The dream would be to eventually get a job with Doctors without borders and write about my experiences…
I may seem to be asking too much out of my education… but I want to squeeze everything I can out of my precious time in school…

thanks

nick, SU hopeful

I called and answered my own question. No to the minor, but yes to the Dual Major.

I was told by New House… that if I maintained my 3.8-3.9 GPA at Syracuse… I could almost be guaranteed acceptance into the Dual Degree program.

An Dual Major at Syracuse in International Relations/Newspaper Journalism
with the availability of classes taken at Maxwell… and a Communications school like New House

Syracuse is becoming my top choice.
I am PRAYING for an affordable financial aid package

with these kind of opportunities… It’d be worth spending a little extra cash on a Syracuse
education… I don’t know if there’s any other institution I applied to that could offer such a perfect education for me.

You can tell I’m excited… Maybe I should tell people I know and not the random people on CC.
