Senior in HS here!
I got into SUNY Bing, UBuffalo & SUNY New Paltz for Computer Science and I’m having trouble deciding where I want to go. I’m from NYC and I haven’t been able to visit any campuses. Any suggestions?
THink about which school can the easiest land you top jobs
Think about the location, which college is at the best location especially if you want to find a job there after four years
The money label may be true in most cases but the aid office differs by school to school too. Like a state uni thats less competitive in terms of rank likely has a less financial aid package for you. School with higher ranking may has a higher financial aid for you and cancels more and left less in its amount.
Think about each’s national level ranking which affects tons (on USNWR).
Now left you to decide and look on the national rankings .
Dad of a senior here. Congratulations! You have some terrific choices. I don’t know Buffalo but we visited both SUNY New Paltz and Binghamton. They are both near the top of the list for my son. Bing is bigger, and has an energetic vibe; it’s a suburban school on the fringe of a mid-sized city. SNP is laid back and with a “hip” vibe in a gorgeous rural area. It’s a choice between smaller liberal arts focus and a bigger university. I don’t think you can go wrong with either. I’ve heard great things about Buffalo too but we’re from NYC at it’s too far. Good luck!
Congratulations! CS is always very competitive and those are top SUNYs.
Did you get into the Honors College at any of those?
Check the CS curriculum: is it within the College of Engineering? Then it’ll likely require a lot more Physics (taken with hardcore engineers) than if it’s in its own college. Compare the requirements.
I’d probably lean toward Bing because it’s a residential campus that’s closer to NYC than Buffalo and the weather is marginally better than Buffalo’s, and the academic caliber of students admitted to Bing is very high.
@MYOS1634 hey! I actually didn’t get into the honors college for either, but I am accepted as an EOP student at Binghamton. I’ll definitely take the advice into consideration. Thanks!
Binghamton and Buffalo appear to have a larger range of upper level CS courses than New Paltz.

Also from NYC here and love both Bing and New Paltz for different major currently. Bing seems more challenging for you but New Paltz is in an adorable town and you can get home fairly easily. I’m also torn between the two for one of my kids … Bing has a nature preserve and while it’s larger, it isn’t overwhelmingly huge. They also seem to be trying to make it a more fun and friendly environment You can’t go wrong with either. (I’m sorry but I don’t know anything about Buffalo). It’s your personal preference–cute town with pretty darn good academics vs larger more traditional campus with better academics on the whole (but I don’t know about your major.) Good luck! And Congrats!
Buffalo is really far. It is very close to Niagara Falls. The school is huge and there is not much around it. It is 8 hours away by Amtrak. Binghamton is in a depressed area but the school itself is nice. There are a lot of NYC kids. There is great transportation into NYC. Binghamton is the top SUNY school. You should go there. It has a great reputation and lots of employers recruit there.
Binghamton is a pretty nice school!
