Bio 1A vs 1B

Hello everyone. I am a third year student at Cal and I need to declare my Psychology major. I was wondering if it is possible to take Bio 1A before Bio 1B? Also, if anyone has taken Psych 117, do u need psych 110? Thanks.

You can take either bio 1a or bio 1b first, there material is very different. Please be advised though that bio 1A has chem 1A as a perquisite, bio 1b does not.

You can take Bio 1A before Bio 1B, but it’s recommended that you take 1B first. I didn’t know that and took 1A first. In hindsight, I wish I had taken 1B first because although they cover different material, I think I would have been better prepared for the rigors of 1A, which is often called a “weeder” class. There’s a ton of material covered in 1A at a fast pace and you’re expected to keep up. I highly recommend signing up for the weekly study group at the Student Learning Center for both 1A and 1B as well as attending office hours. The class is webcast so you can view lectures online beforehand to see what they’re like. Good luck!

Interesting enough, they are planning within a year or two to modify the Biology 1 series so each class will be more connected, and 1A will be a prerequisite of 1B. I wonder how that will turn out :D
