how easy is it to find a research/medical intership? since davis is a bit secluded and all, I would assume that doctors, dentists, surgeons, practioners aren’t exactly in high numbers

i’m not in environmental science (which I know would be great in Davis)

so for all of you bio majors in UC davis, how’s the search for an intership coming along?

it is scarce? hard to get in?

what are ur experiences?
i know there are a great deal of internships available in davis, however I am concerned with mostly the medical

There should be MANY internship opportunities for the motivated student. If you have interest in any of the biomedical fields, you should consider that there are many overlapping fields of study within the med school-med center/vet school/comparative medicine center/primate center/genome sciences, etc and investigating all of these areas should enable you to figure out options for research that might interest you. There is also nothing to say that you can't just go knock on professor's doors and ask about internship possibilities. In addition, UCD runs shuttles between the med center and campus which also provides opportunities for research in Sacramento.

One thing that you should understand is that it is generally easier for professors to take on undergraduate interns when they also have willing graduate students or post-docs in their labs since many undergrads (or likely most) come with limited skills and most biomedical research is very technical in nature and professors have other things competing for their time. If you are dedicated and pay attention to details, you should quickly transition from a trainee requiring lots of supervision to a valued member of a research laboratory.

If you are a minority you can join a program called BUSP .. I'm not in it since I'm not a bio person, but I know it funds you to do research with a bio-type professor

There are lots of opportunities and it very easy for serious students to get internships here at UCD.

If you want to do an internship in a lab, take a class and get an A, then approach the professor. (Some professors even email all A or A- students and ask them if they want to work in their lab). Most of our Microbiology and Genetics Professors are on the look out for student interns.
