Hi

I was wondering which of the majors (bio & chem) is more competitive, and why?

Thanks

competitive? like for pre meds? i gotta vote for bio. the chem major is actually really small. i would guess roughly 70 kids per year (plus some chem engs too). some chem majors are like me, where we actually in chem for chem. a fair number are still prehealth and are taking bio classes and may be just as competitive. (prepharm students?)

that being said, note all bio majors are anally competative. but it only takes a few ass****s to give you a bad impression. there are plenty of bio majors who are really cool and may/may not be prehealth. ive heard the 2nd year of bio (the 98 and 99 in particular) can be competitive. as for upper div, i cant really say.

about how many kids per year does bio get?

i wish i could give you hard numbers, but i cant. instead, i’ll BS some up for you real quick

lets count the number of kids enrolled in bio 94 this past winter (via websoc)
167+443+381+388+69+74= 1 522 kids
now bio 94 is a bio major only course. if you see some english major who is pre med, they shouldnt have to take bio 94 (just 97-99, which is way i didnt use those classes as a comparison.) additionally, this doesnt count the number of kids who drop the class/major during the quarter. so guess at 1650 maybe? also, this doesnt count the kids who end up dropping due to ochem. (probably quite a few…)

if we look at the two major chem classes for juniors (151 and 107), we get about 150 chem majors. additionally, realize that some chem majors are basically bio majors and are premed and everything. they just wanted to be “different” from bio majors and picked chemistry (most of the electives and what not, are bio oriented)

its a hard comparision to the two using the metric ive given honestly. i googled around and couldnt find a spreadsheet or anything about the kids entering/leaving. im sure they have one though.

I’m not a Bio major and I took(and had to take) Bio 94 =/

That and I know some bio majors that didn’t take the course( ?? they said they were exempted with AP but I have no idea how they managed that one)
