Bio1A/1AL and Chem 3B??

Hi. I'm a second year, and am considering taking bio 1a/al with chem 3b, and econ 1 next semester. Is taking chem 3b and bio1a/al too much? I'm purposely not taking 3bl to avoid over working myself even more. If I don't take bio 1a/al in the spring, then I would have to take it over the summer, which I heard is terrible. So, I was hoping someone who has taken 3b and bio 1a/al could advise me?

Thankss!

P.S. I'd be taking econ 1 with professor olney who is known for being difficult.

3b with pederson means problem sets to do. stay on top of it. Bio 1a/l isn’t bad; it’s just a lot of memorization and you’ll have to allocate time for that (I don’t know how the spring professors are though).
Essentially, your work is gonna be problem sets and memorization. Without 3b lab, you should be fine because pederson isn’t a bad teacher as long as you go to lectures and do his problem sets.

ooh, I’ve taken all those classes :)

That’s not a bad schedule. Pedersen is awesome and with just the lecture, it shouldn’t take up much of your time. You just need to take good lecture notes and spend a weekend before each test with the problem set books.

Olney is also awesome. I had her for 100B and that wasn’t difficult at all, so I can’t really imagine Econ 1 with her to be hard.

Bio1AL will take up most of your time, but you’ll be fine as long as you don’t take a 4th class that’s time consuming.

i think it’s doable if you keep yourself motivated and don’t fall behind

Ugh Bio 1AL took up so much time. You might not die from that schedule but you might get stabbed here and there especially if midterms are close to each other.

I feel like I never post anymore after having finished these lower div classes. Aww I miss all you third year bio majors tear lol

we can still commiserate together if you’re taking ib classes :)

cb2012 are you an mcb major? what classes are you taking right now?

I personally wouldn’t take Chem 3B with bio 1a/l and another important lower div like econ 1. But hey, that’s just me. You may not have much of a social life. Though I guess without lab it lessens the load. 3BL took a crap-ton of time for what it was…

sidenote: woot! IB FTW!

Nah I’m MEB and I’m done with all my mcb classes (yay for 102 being over barf) so now I’m just taking IB classes like endo 137 with hayes (AMAZING!) and I think im toxicology with 88888888 (I assume its eight 8s). I knew mech and flutter were mcb, but I didnt know you were in IB?

mechrocket what are you taking right now? are you in Chem 113?

wait so who is in IB?

no i decided i couldn’t wake up for that lol. i’m taking mcb 136 + mcb 102.

how is 113 though so far? i might still want to take it in the future, it seemed interesting from the course description.

Teacher’s not great, pretty sure she was a grad student up till last year lol. The class isn’t very hard so far though and I did well on the first midterm. I guess those chem majors actually don’t have an advantage :)

do you just go more in-depth into 3a/3b stuff? what have you guys learned so far?

yeah, the topics are pretty much the same - molecular orbital theory, cyclohexane, steroselective/stereospecific reactions, but it’s more quantitative like we actually learned how to calculate energy levels and rotational barriers etc. And learned some new models like Felkin-Anh and chelation control if you’re interested lol

also she talks about some specific experimental stuff like methods of separating enantiomers and using specific reagents to select products. and I think we’re starting kinetics now.

separating enantiomers always sounds cool in theory but screws up in real life lol.

lol ***… how do u know im in toxicology…

secret identity blown! haha jk cuz you said you were a mol tox major duh

calbear totz stalking you

lol… obvi
