Biochemistry class

I'm thinking about taking Biochemistry after I'm done taking Organic chem I and 2. Should I take the class? (I'm a BME major) Would it help me in anyway toward understanding biochemical processes better and whatnot. Did you ever take Biochem, as a Chem E or BME?

Yes, I took one semester of biochemistry as an elective for ChE. It’s first of all an interesting course in and of itself, and the course provides an in-depth background knowledge should you have an interest in bioreaction engineering/biocatalysis. Are those areas of research/work in BME?

At my school biochem is actually required for ChemE majors. It’s a good pre-med class, too.

I’m a biochemical engineer, and I had to take several biochemistry courses. Did it help me? Not really. I haven’t found any biochemistry courses applicable to any of my work yet so far. Bioprocessing deals more with fermentation, and unless you’re into research none of the biochemistry stuff will matter to you. Also, I don’t know how a BME from you’re school work, but a BME at Davis is required to take some fundamental biochemistry classes anyhow.

It’s weird because our school doesn’t even require a full Organic Chemistry class for BME. I’m already taking Organic Chemistry as an extra class.

Our school only offers Organic and Biochemistry combined, which is basically: memorization of bunch of reactions, memorize a bunch of biochemical processes and you’re set :open_mouth:

I might actually want to do the research part of BME, at least at the start.
