Summers:
Summer, 2011: (By the end, will have done 4 months of research as I started in April, so I approximate ~560 Hours of Lab work will be done) Laboratory Research doing Crystallography at the Molecular Design Institute at NYU, studying helical twisting during crystal growth.
Shadowing Pediatric Neurosurgeons (i.e. observing procedures, etc.) and Interventional Radiologists.
Summer, 2010, 1.5 months of research (~105 Hours) – worked in laboratory of Nikola Pavletich, PhD. Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Institute – research on cell pathways and how their mutations contribute to cancer in Ataxia Telangiectasia (ATM) using HEK293 cells.
Summers of 2008-2010: Soccer Camps in Italy (Perugia, Milan), England (Manchester), and Connecticut
Hiking: I’ve hiked all around the world, from the Grand Canyon to the Alps. It’s essentially the time where my father, brother and I can bond, as we don’t get to see each other too much. My brother is in college and my father lives pretty far away from me.

Founding Member and President of The Athletics Council (essentially student council for Athletics, but we actually do something)
Community Service work at Rockman County Department of Social Services.
Community Service work at St. Luke’s Roosevelt Hospital
Community Service work at Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center
Community Service work at Fort Montgomery
UNIS Wind Ensemble - Trumpet
History Club

Painting: I paint miniatures and have won various competitions in my city, and have been painting since as long as I can remember. It was a part of my childhood.

Employment:
Referee at Indoor Soccer Tournament (9-weeks long) for two years

Interests:
Medicine- I hope to attend med-school at some point in my life, to follow in the foot steps of my parents and my pseudo-grandfather (essentially my grandfather who wasn’t a blood relative, but a second-dad to my parents, who recently died; his death prompted me to want to pursue medicine more than I had previously)
History- I also hope to take Classical Studies in college, maybe even double-majoring in a science and classical studies. I love Greek and Roman history (mainly Roman, as I am Italian) but my school does not offer ancient Greek and Roman history so I did not take history in Junior year. My history teacher from freshman and sophomore year and I recently discussed taking an extra history course in this upcoming year where he would give me extra work on the history that I love.
English/Sci Fi- Science fiction is one of my interests that has stayed with me throughout my life. I collect and paint Warhammer 40K models, which are essentially futuristic fantasy miniatures with a rich background that drew me all those years ago, and I haven’t been able to let up. I read countless sci-fi novels; I have a veritable library of at least 50-60 novels recounting the 40K universe. I took Higher Level English because I love fiction so much and luckily enough the IB curriculum is centered around ‘the novel’ (at least at my school).

Interesting Fact:
Had a freak-accident when I was in freshman year, as my collarbone shattered from a nasty foul in an indoor game. You might say this is a pretty common injury, and yes breaking your clavicle is pretty common, however mine actually shattered. I was disfigured by the accident and I needed surgery and the surgeons found that the bone had actually fragmented into many pieces, which complicated the surgery, as you can imagine. It sort of caused my to re-arrange my priorities.

Self-Opinion:
Strengths- I feel my strengths lie in my passions: soccer and science. I truly care for science and went out to find people who would be willing to take me under their wing and teach me more about the world. I got two very different sides of the research spectrum, one in an academic institution and one in a more federally funded type of place.
Weaknesses-Obviously, my standardized test scores are not that great. In a time where all I can see are the 2250+’s and the 800 on SAT II’s, I can’t help but feel under-qualified for the places I want to go to. I know I can get these scores up, but in truth I don’t really want to fret over one test so much.

Major I want to pursue:
B.S. in Biochemistry/Chemistry and B.A. in Ancient History
Hopefully I can get into a B.A/M.D. program.

What do you guys think?

A BA/MD program will be difficult, because while you have some clear expressed interest in medicine, you don’t have a lot (My mom interviews and used to be on an admissions committee for med school and also did a BM/MD so she’s told me what they look for). But it’s worth a shot.

Also, both parents are doctors, if it means anything, however it was totally my decision to want to get into medicine and only the exposure to medicine throughout the years i think influenced my decision.

What else do they look for?

Just a lot of clear indication of medical interest. You have a shot, it’s not completely impossible, but I do suggest applying to some regular schools, as well.

Oh of course I plan on applying to regular schools. I want to apply to REMS and Baylor/Rice, but only if my SAT/ACT scores are up to the task. Thanks for the input.
