The 3 GSI's I've worked with focused mostly on pre-lab material. Sometimes, they'll throw in questions from lectures (usually the lectures from the week leading up to the lab) to make sure students are not putting off the webcasts. But really, it depends on the GSI that you have.

so the pre-labs seems to have a lot more info than covered by the lectures. will the midterms also cover the info in these pre-labs? what about the quizzes in section? will those be based on the pre-lab reading or the lectures --> i mean on SPECIFIC info from the pre-labs?

thanks

the pre-labs seem very specific and detailed (specific examples of fungi, info about slime molds not covered in lecture). will this really show up on the quiz? thats kind of scary in that we are being tested on material thats either too specific or not covered by the professor. hmmm

do we get split into new groups every week? or do we stay with the same group thruout the semester? just wondering.

new groups for each unit (3 in total)

Yeah, for my lab, it's the same group for the whole semester. I was kinda hoping that there would be new groups every once in a while since you could meet new people that way but I guess it's just easier to keep the same groups.

Again, this depends on your GSI. Some GSI likes to do group evaluations (not the ones on your lab packets) every so often. And if he/she seems fit, she'll ask the class if it wants to have different groups.

Question about Bio1B in spring... Feldman says there's no curve... with the average of first midterm being 81.9, is there a chance the 90+ is A- will be lowered? Also, what is the usual cutoff between A-/A and B+/B, etc.?

@LH: what do u mean by Feldman's avg went much higher?

i haven't even gotten my grade back yet, i'm pretty ****ed.

what do you think the cutoff for A- and A is going to be this semester? (in terms of percentage)?

Is ugsi same as gsi?

is bio 1a and 1b the same book?

UGSI is an undergrad who helps out in lab.

Bio1A and 1B use the same book. Book isn’t all that helpful for the class though.

What was the average for evolution midterm?

The average for the evolution midterm was 85 or 86% (I can’t remember for sure)

so anyways…now the cutoff

nobody knows yet!! stop freaking out! Darn pre-meds.

santa: essentially, no one’s gonna really know until after the finals. and i’m 95% sure these professors will not move the cutoffs up, so the minimum would always be the standard 90%. My guess is that if it does move, it’ll probably be around 87-88. But this is just me completely guessing. It’s just gonna be based on how the class overall does (as said by my GSI).

Did anyone else find it funny when Resh was like you all have a chance to get As after seeing the results of the evolution test? That was such a burn but I guess it’s a good thing for us since it means that we all did pretty well.

The class is curved at the very end. This is how the grades were done for Fall 2007 and Fall 2008.

what has been the cutoff in the past?

It depends.

They graph all the final points for the class on this huge posterboard. Then they (maybe Mike Moser, profs, and GSI’s) look for natural breaks in the class distribution to assign grades.
