Biology 1B: Tips and Tricks

i found that the 85% mean for the lab sections really screwed me as my whole lab was very smart…

can anyone throw more light into what the cutoffs were usually in the years past? i am hoping 90% is NOT the cutoff for an A-

so the 85% mean… does that mean that they average everyone’s grade in your lab section and make that average 85%? and is this your section only or also the section that you’re in lab with… since there are essentially 2 sections for each lab?

from what leftist said before about how they dropped it in the past… i don’t think they will since feldman’s avg was so high. sad :(

my gsi told me that how he did it was that he found the actual class mean (lets say 90) then subtracted 5% from everyone’s grade to make it an 85% average…this really sucks because even though i was higher than 90 (and thus it was really helping my overall grade for the class out), i got bumped down…

hey leftist, do all the sections do it this same way? i am really concerned because this seems highly unfair to me

i think my gsi is doing it the same way SB, and our average is super-high as well…

this is so stupid…it’s not fair at all

i think it would be a LOT fairer if they took the average of ALL the sections and then dropped it down to 85%. that just makes a lot more sense to me rather than individual sections.

^How is that fair?
I know for sure that there are definitely some sections that are harder than others. My section has a lab report due each week and I heard there was a section that had quizzes every week. It wouldn’t be fair for my section to be averaged with people with sections that were easier. I say the way they have it now is fair since there really is a difference in grading for sections.

i guess you’re right, but still, everyone in my section has a really high grade so my grade will probably be automatically dropped by a fair bit, even when i feel i don’t know less than any other person who’s taking this class.

we should all blame our GSIs then… it’s a matter of what the GSI decides to assign and how he/she grades… i’m guessing that in the end, it’s better to have a harder GSI…

yea this really sucks…i thought i would for sure get an A but now im pretty sure thats impossible

i hate my gsi. we have quizzes each week…and personally, I think she picked my group to be the lower side of the discussion. Like for our lab reports, we rarely get higher than a 16 or 17 out of 20 (hell we even got as low as a 14) while all the other groups are getting like 18 and 19s (also seems she doesn’t give out full marks either.) In the short run, 1 or 2 points don’t matter, but accumulating them at the end? We get put on the short end of the stick. Our average was like a 86 while all the other groups were 89-92. F this bs.

They should just have a standard quiz or not have one and be more organized withthe labs.

yea i concur. same goes with chem.

Batman, that isn’t too bad. My group gets 14s all the time. I ****ing hate lab. It’s ruining my grade. I do ok on the individual work but those labs always get me.

I totally agree with standardizing quizzes. Maybe they should consider standardizing the work we do too instead of letting the GSIs decide where our points go. That would be fairer. I would imagine that they can’t use a standard quiz though since people with later labs would have more of an advantage.

^
maybe you guys are in the same labs…

Hmm, I don’t think we have the same lab since my GSI doesn’t give out quizzes each week. We do have lab reports every week though. Our section average is actually less than 85%. :[

they couldn’t just let bio 1b be as easy as it is
berkeley just had it screw it up for all the pre-meds
even though i DESERVE an A, i won’t get one…thanks berkeley
its moments like these that make me regret declining certain other private schools

lol and why is it that you think you DESERVE an A?

If I get a C or B-, I’m quitting IB and going to MC friggin B.
lmao.

MC friggin B?

at least you guys know what you got in lab… my GSI has returned maybe the first 2 weeks of work only…
