i am currently going to take bio 93, chem 1a, bio 2a, and math 2b but i am a little confuse in which book should i buy for the courses. they listed a bunch of required book but when buying it online in the book store, it said only to pick one. how do i know which one is good for me? any advices? what did u buy?

for bio 93/94, just use biology by campbell. they have customized editors- its complete bull. they’re ripping you off (textbook companies). you probably used it in ap bio. any edition.

chem 1a- chemistry by zumdal (sp?). probably going to need whatever edition the school is using so the homework problems sync up (the change the order every edition). if you dont plan on doing hw, just get whatever edition you want.

math 2b- the bundles in the store are fine. you may need to get a larger bundle if you plan on taking multivar calc (2d and 2e). if you are a bio major, you probably dont have to.

The books for Chem 1A are actually by Chang.

Actually they’ve migrated to a different author in 94 so be careful about that, name Scott Freeman. Bio 94 tends to “keep up” with modern day speculations and you’ll be tested upon accordingly. Still could get an A with Campbell but will have to spend extra effort in finding the corresponding information than you would in bio 93.

From looking at the bookstore its only the chem books that say choose one. Its because 1 listed as required is a paperback copy and the other listed as required is looseleaf(need a binder). On that note I never read a page of my chem book and only used it to do problems, though we had a different book that sucked in my opinion.
If you are confused about your books you could always go in and buy them in person.

For math its a little different. One of the required texts is smaller and only includes the 2A/2B material. The other has 2A-2E so if you plan to continue beyond 2B you need to purchase that. They are the same books though.

are there any differences between new and used books in terms of having some type of online access? I know that the new bio book allows you access to some online questions while the used one does not. Is something similar true for chem and calc? Also if you buy a used book through the uci bookstore, do they check to make sure the book is in good condition? is it possible to be sent a textbook that is in horrible condition?

For Math 2a, what are the books we need. Most people are selling the Single Variable Calculus 3rd Edition by Smith and Minton, but I checked the bookstore and it says that we need to get the book by STEWART? o_O So do I have to get it off Amazon or something now?

What the, can you please explain the logic in this? I doubt anyone understands why your asking and how that pertains to what your information is. If you need Stewart’s book… get his book, why would this entail that you have to buy it off Amazon? Of course you won’t buy needless items from others…
