Hi so I'm planning on going to Rutgers for undergrad and I was wondering how hard the Bio major is. I hear that Rutgers biology is pretty strong, and its one of the most competitive majors. Any inputs on the difficulty level? Average GPA of bio majors?

I heard that really difficult, just saying

Being a bio major is definitely not easy. The Chem department is on probation and I know many students who switched out of bio majors because they couldn’t keep their grades up. If you have the dedication, it’s a really rewarding degree to graduate with.

I think the Biology major is quite difficult at RU, as well as all of the other science courses. However, it is totally do-able, as long as you set your mind to it.

Is there a specific reason why you are considering biology as your major?

Why is the Chemistry Dept. on probation? Probation to who? Does that effect anyone admitted to RU this year? Should people who were considering Chemistry as a major, rethink it? Is it harder to get into a dental school with engineering rather than Bio or chem? Thanks.

Chemistry is very hard at rutgers and with such a small percentage of students passing Chemistry with decent grades, the department was put on probation. Its like you would attend lecture and be taught simpler material than what was actually on the test. This does not effect students directly cause they still offer the same chemistry courses.Im a biotechnology and genetics major, with a premed preference and lets put it this way, you work very hard your grades.
Dental and Medical schools don’t care what major you are, as long as you do well, and do well on the boards. you could be an art major for all they care but as long as you take the prerequisite your good.

Am I better off considering a different major that might give me a better chance at a high GPA? Even if its not in the Science area? Then I only have to get a good score on the Dental School Test. No wonder kids freak out.

The Biology major at Rutgers isnt easy but isnt impossible either. If your just doing Biological Sciences as a major, there are tons of courses offered some of which are tough but some of which are fairly easy too. Obv classes like Physiology, Genetics and Biochem arent easy but classes focused on Ecology tend to be easier. Im basically done with my Bio major and the only class in my major that gave me trouble was Orgo(yes gchem, orgo, bio and physics are part of the Biological sciences major at Rutgers so if our pre med or pre dent you can “kill two bird with one stone” by both completing your general science requirements while at the same time letting them count for your major)

what? CHemistry department is on probation? I don’t understand what you mean by that. The engineering chemistry department seems to be running fine.
