Biology Major- UVA or Clemson?

Hi all,

I've known for a long time that I want to study biology, specifically ecology and ethology/animal behavior. My hope is to go into field research. My choices have pretty much come down to Clemson and UVA, both of which have positives, and I'm having a tough time choosing.

On the one hand, UVA is incredibly prestigious and has very strong academics, which is something that's very important to me. The school has some strong programs and I've always heard that the people there have great connections as far as internships and jobs go. BUT their biology program seems sort of limited; they have only one biology major and it seems like its more pre-med focused, which is not the direction I want to go in. Clemson has an entire school devoted to animal sciences, and much larger, more flexible research and study abroad programs. But it's also 8 hours from me and a different social and academic atmosphere than I'm used to.

Basically I'm afraid of being limited; either in the level of the academics or in the opportunities for biology. Any opinions, insight, on either school or even just biology would be amazing! Thanks!!

ALSO: I would be in Honors Program at Clemson.

Just to clarify, UVA offers a few options for biology. You can major in bio. You can also apply for a distinguished major in bio, human bio, and neuroscience. If you’re an Echols Scholar, you can design your own bio major (Echols major).
