Hi I am going to Umass Amherst in the fall and I am in the pre-med track, majoring in biology. I got a passing score on my AP Bio Exam and I was told this gives the credit for biology 151. But my premed advisor said that ap bio will give the credit for bio 151 but I will then have to take a lower level biology course, I think biology 100. My question is what's the point of getting credit for a upper level biology class and then taking a lower level. Do you think I should take the lower leve (100)l and get the credit for that and the upper level (151) or should I just take the upper level biology (151) and just cancel the credit from the AP Biology test. I don't exactly understand the reasoning behind getting credit for an upper level course and then taking a lower one. Please help.

I suggest you start doing your own research from now on instead of just relying on your advisor’s word. A simple Google search uncovers the following regarding coursework:

“Introductory Biology (Biology 151, 152) 7 credits and lab (Biology 153) 2 credits
AP Biology score transfers only as Biology 110”
(<a href=“Student Resources : College of Natural Sciences : UMass Amherst”>Student Resources : College of Natural Sciences : UMass Amherst)

“Bio 151, 152, and 153 cannot be replaced by advanced placement (AP) Biology credits and are not waived by BMB department.”
(<a href=“Requirements for BMB Majors | Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology | UMass Amherst”>https://www.biochem.umass.edu/undergraduate/current-students/major-requirements)

You will receive credit for the lower level (110) but will still have to take the 150 series.
