Office of Undergraduate Admissions: AP Guidelines

I plan to meet the Pre Med requirements as an undergrad and to graduate a semester early by getting credit from my AP Exam Scores. I currently have 3 St. Johns credit from AP Spanish, a 5 on AP Biology, and a 4 on AP European History.

I do not completely understand what is said in the guidelines. If I take Biology 171/172 which I think is the beginner's level Biology, would that mean I would not be able to get credit from my AP Biology. Would I only be able to use the credit if I take a harder Biology class, courses having Bio 171 or 172 as a prerequisite?

Would a similar situation be the case for Calculus and Physics classes? I will be taking the AP Calculus AB and Physics B Exams this May and expect to get a 4 or 5 on each of them. ( I will also be taking AP US Government)

I can only speak on Biology as my son is looking at U-M. You are correct that the normal intro Biology track is 171,172, and 173 (lab). If you get a 4 or 5 on your AP Biology exam you are given 5 credits and can skip taking 171 and 172. If you wanted to pursue further Biology courses you would start with credit for Bio 195 and take 173 (lab).

As far as taking the lower classes I think you would lose the AP credit but that is the same with every college I have seen. I think that is so students don’t take easy classes to boost their GPA if they belong in a higher level class.

P.S. If you did start with 173 you would end up with 7 credits as opposed to 10 if you took 171 and 172 and 173. This would satisfy your 7 distribution credits for NS and be applied to your 120 credits needed for your degree.

Sorry but what is NS?

Sorry, natural sciences. You have 30 area distribution credits you must complete assuming your are completing a BS or BA degree. You have 7 in NS as well as 7 in SS and HU. The other 9 credits can be 3 each in any of the previous 3 or in either MSA or CE or ID.

* HU (Humanities)
- NS (Natural Science)
- SS (Social Science)
- MSA (Math & Symbolic Analysis)
- CE (Creative Expression)
- ID (Interdisciplinary)
