Birthdate and repeating a year at top schools

Just curious how many of you admitted to HADES or GLADCHEMMS schools have birthdays late in the year or will have repeated a grade making you older than your peers?

Is your birthday from Jan 1 - August 31?

Sept 1 - Dec 31?

Repeated a grade?

DS reports that in his Freshman class, he is aware of at least a third of the boys being repeats-- he doesn’t know the exact percentage. There are repeat girls, too, but the phenomenom is predominently a boy stragegy.

I’m accepted at two of those schools as a repeat sophomore. My birthday is in the spring of the year where usually the oldest (not repeats) are born in the fall of that year. It seems to be more common at the larger schools as I feel that I would be more comfortable being a new sophomore and a repeat at the larger school.

DS applied as a repeat 9th grader; he has a “ber” birthday: Septem-ber, Octo-ber, etc. We’re “undoing” an earlier grade skip, so he will turn 15 during his first year at prep school. We made the decision for a variety of reasons, including having his age be more in line with his grade peers, instead of being the youngest in his class. Academic challenge, or “running out of appropriate classes” will not be a problem at his new school.

My DS’s birthday is in late fall. We had him start school one year earlier, never had any issues being the youngest maybe until now. He was advised to repeat a grade when applying for the HEADS school, especially he has to board. We as a family don’t like the idea. The results - accepted at a hidden gem and wait listed at a HEADS. I doubted if we should have listened.

Around 20% of the boys come in as repeats. However, some nonrepeats have repeated a year prior to high school (eg. preK or K). So in reality the percentage is higher. It’s a lot less for the girls, since girls mature much earlier.

My birthday is in April, and I skipped a grade when I was younger, so I am the youngest in my grade (8). I’m also younger than the majority of the 7th graders, and a few 6th graders that got held back. I applied to a HADES/GLADCHEMMS school as a 9th grader and got accepted. Most of the kids in my grade are 14-15, and many of my friends are freshmen/sophomores anyway, so I’m not worried about the age thing for next year.

My DS has a spring birthday was accepted to two GLADCHEMMS for his year. Another school asked him to apply as a repeat but waitlisted him anyway.

I’ve been thinking about repeating a grade as I’m a late August baby :)
