Bit confused and worried again - housing

Can I ask our current students here on the forum how they feel about having a freshman as a roommate when they’re a sophomore or beyond? Looks to me like the 2 people already in spaces in Ds suite will be sophomores while she’s a freshman. I’m fine with that, and I’m figuring they had time to find 2 other roommates if it was an issue for them, but I can see pros and cons for all parties. Any insights?

Montegut, does your ds already have a “foursome”? Mine went to UFE/CBH weekend and came home talking about all the awesome people he had met there. So I figured he’d have a ready supply of potential roommates, right?

But no! He confesses that he spent all his time that weekend getting to know the GIRLS! I guess I should not be surprised.

Last year one of my roommates decided to attend another school. For some reason, it took a long time before housing confirmed that he had canceled his room assignment. After a brief period when we had a 4th roommate, housing placed an administrative block on the final space saying that we might get a new roommate in January. This ended up not being the case and we later pulled in a a friend who wanted to switch dorms.

I ended up having all freshman roommates this year (my freshman year) and it appears that all my new roommates will be freshmen next year too. I know people who have sophomore roommates and they enjoy it. For me, age is more just a number. It’s maturity (or immaturity) that matters.

^^^

I agree with SEA_Tide…I don’t think it’s a big deal for a freshman to have a couple of sophomore suitemates. At Bama, some of the “standings” are rather arbitrary. My younger son is a “true” freshman, but he has junior standing, so that’s what it says on his housing.

thanks for the help guys. Going through all the people I know heading to UA next year, then I’m gonna start on the 2014 facebook group.

Thanks M2CK & SEA_Tide! My D has friends older & younger than her so I wasn’t worried about it for her, but I didn’t know if there would be an “ewwww! Freshman” reaction  And that’s a good point about their class standings. D will be a sophomore by 2nd semester anyway credit wise.

I would not worry if your student is a freshman living with an upperclassman. There are plenty of freshmen sitting in the same classes as upperclassmen. You might stand out more if you were in a tiny school (my son came from a school with fewer 400 students in grades 8-12, so everyone knew everyone.) As he would say, he’s used to being the youngest in class and among his friends. He entered UA with junior standing, too.
