Bizarre IVY capitalization

I know that this might seem silly, but I've been seeing a lot of posts lately that weirdly capitalize the entire word "Ivy" - so that it's IVY. This has seemed odd to me, but it's been more and more widespread on this board (example: "I really like the University of Virginia but Cornell is an IVY so I don't know what to do." Umm, is that random capitalization really necessary?).

I just thought it seemed odd. I understanding capitalizing, for example, NESCAC because it stands for something, bit Ivy isn't an acronym. What is this about?

Subconscious reverence for Ivies maybe? Who knows, this is a very strange thread, though.

HYP
Harvard
Yale
Princeton

IVY
Ithaca
Villanova
Yeshiva

But in all seriousness, people say far weirder things about the Ivy League Sports Conference here, so I generally tend to let it slide.

I’ve been thinking the same thing! x) I just figured people did that since they percieved ivy as important.

People around here also refer to individual members of an admission committee as “Adcoms”… lol.

There are a bunch of weird abbreviations here on CC…
for example
OOS-Out of State

Also, D(arling) anything is weird. DH, DD, DS. Clearly they’re “Darling,” they’re your family members.

To answer the original question, I guess Ivies are really important/prestigious? Agree that it’s weird though…

And I always thought it was Da*n Son–

^LOOOOL omg I’ve thought about all these things too - -.

When I see Ivy being written as IVY, it seems like the poster is zealously shouting IVY!! just my thought.
