In my uniform list it says that black dress shoes need to be purchased at home and will not be provided by the school but what are black dress shoes, where can I buy them, good brands... etc

Black dress shoes means any black shoes that will be appropriate to wear with a shirt & tie (for boys) or appropriate to wear with a skirt (for girls), i.e. it means: not sneakers, flip flops, hiking boots, crocs, etc…

Brands don’t matter but I’ll presume you’ll be wearing them daily, so if your budget permits I would get two pairs of decent quality shoes that will be comfortable to walk in ALL DAY – though you’ll be sitting in classes, you’ll be walking, sometimes at a pretty good clip, to, between and from classes, and up and down stairs. If you don’t have local shoe stores or department stores with shoe departments in your immediate vicinity, there are plenty of online sources. I’d look for one with free shipping and return policies.
There are several, including Zappos, ShoeBuy, and Shoes.com

A couple of specific suggestions (all currently worn by either or both of my daughters):

Bass Weejuns…classic penny loafer that will never go out of style (though most will not regard it as that “in style” these days).

Black Ballet Flats…find ones that fit and which offer a good combo of durability and cost. You do not have to rock Tory Burchs.

Feeling daring? Get a pair of black oxford laceups for the “school boy” look. Just search on Zappos for examples.
