ok i was watching wimbledon and i got thinking. how come there are NO black male tennis players? (and with the exception of the williams's sister- no female black tennis players?)
i found this odd considering that there are several black athletes in almost every sport.

(my knowledge of tennis is not that great, so i might be wrong... but no black tennis player comes to mind when i think of it..)

You have to have money to play tennis. You can't just pick up a game anywhere. Most inner-city kids can't just get lessons or go to tennis academies like that.

Males:
There is James Blake, who actually did grow up in the 'inner city', but he lost early on in the Wimbledon due to previous injuries taking time away from practice and his dad dying.

Donald Young is one of the top juniors in the world and within 3 years should start to gain notice.

Malivai Washington is a commentator now, but he was good.

Yannick Noah is a frenchman and he retired a while ago.

Younes El Aynaoui had injuries and I'm not sure if he retired or not.

There are a couple of decent blacks in the pipeline, but nothing on Roddick's level. Why does there have to be black males in a sport for certain people to accept it. Save for football, basketball, and certain track and field events, whites dominate every sport out there. 90% of the medals won at the Olympics are won by white athletes.

"90% of the medals won at the Olympics are won by white athletes."
yeah, there aren't that many black trampoline gymnasts, ping pong players, high-divers, swimmers, etc.

thanks for mentioning arthur ashe and althea gibson, i hadnt heard of them...

but its still weird that blacks- who excel at athletics should be SO unrepresented in tennis. ever seen the starting line up a the olympics 100 meter dash?
btw... im neither black nor white, im brown. :P

Yup, there are good upcoming players, but no one really standout now. Donald Young is 15 years old and very hyped. James Blake is the best Black tennis player out there, but after a horrible injury and illness, he hasn't been the same. But he's a good guy and believes in himself. Arthur Ashe is a legend. The US Open takes place in Arthur Ashe stadium. There would be more Black male tennis players if more Black males were interested in tennis. It's not cool enough for them, I guess.

Yeah seriously lol. Some people were saying it like it was perfectly fine to say 'Well there are no tennis courts in the ghetto, where all those colored folk hang out.' Give me a break. ;)
