Hey guys, I am currently a freshmen applying for sophomore standing.

I just got my grades and I am wondering if they will be good enough for Georgetown's School of Foreign Service.

Transferring from Davidson College with 3 A-'s, and 1 B+

Three of my classes were 300+ level and above, and one 200+.

My recommendations and extracurriculars are both great, I don't feel the need to elaborate, but just take my word for it and assume so.

My high school record is pretty good - Top 25%-30% at prestigious prep school.

Sat- 1380/1600

Do you guys think my college gpa is good enough? The grade deflation here is a ***** and I was taking nearly all senior level courses as a freshmen...

Yeah, first of all, it's "freshman," and second of all - cheesy thread title to gain attention to the topic --> uncool. This isn't that kind of forum.

It could just be a false dillusion of mine, but shouldn't freshmen take freshmen level courses unless they received credit via AP/opt-out?

I back my statement with substance:
Taking upper division courses (that you have not placed/tested into) will actually hurt your chances at transferring into the UC system. (which is only an example) There is a curriculum for a reason, which has been designed for specific purposes. Skipping out on freshman course such as, oh let's say composition, may hurt both your education in general and your chances for transferring. It's may also seem pretentious to take so many upper division courses at such an early time.

I highly encourage you to blackmail the dean if possible. This greatly influences your chances, especially if the dean's job comes into jeopardy. Good luck!

Yes, your grades are good enough. Your app looks strong. What about ECs? I know Georgetown looks at those a lot esp with the concentration/school you are considering.

In terms of extracurriculars, I spent last year studying in Germany at a famous university on a Government Scholarship. Furthermore, all of my prior extracurricular experience can be correlated to this interest in international relations. I think my strongest area of strength is probably my extracurriculars because they are both unique and highly impressive in the field of interest they represent. Finally, I will have a strong recommendation from a well known professor in international relations who has lectured before at Gtown.

Thanks to the one guy who answered my question.

I think you have a reasonable shot. Your ECs sound great! The situation with the grades is basically the same in first year admissions. Yes, they will like that you challenged yourself, but they will not like the rather low grades. Nonetheless, this will not be a significant weak point because you obviously have a very strong passion for what you want to do and an A- does not mean you're not smart enough to pursue it. Ensure that you work hard on those essays and I think you will have a good shot at getting in. Good luck!

Oh also, placing out will not hurt you at Georgetown. I asked them a question about that in regards to placing out of English and Bio classes and they said there was no problem with that and it would not count against me in any way.
