I'm a third year undergraduate at UCI and this year I did not qualify for any cal grants or pell grant. My parents still made less than $80,000. According to my Aid Award, I'm only receiving about $3,000 from the UCI grant and the rest are loans. It also says I'm eligible for the Blue and Gold Opportunity Plan. So does that mean the UCI grant is part of that plan? Or will the B&G Plan pay for the rest of my tuition (which is about $10,000) so I wont have to take out any loans?

you need to call UCI FA office.

Did you go to a CC first?

Do you have a lot of credits?

If your aid award SAYS that you’re eligible for B&G, ask UCI why you’re not getting a larger grant. Your grants should cover the UC basic fees (whatever those are now…around $11k??? …I think)

Pell Grant is based on EFC. It is possible you don’t have CAL Grant as a 3rd year if you entered with Junior standing.

Even if the student doesn’t qualify for Pell…if the student qualifies for B&G (and we don’t yet know if the student STILL qualifies after corrections were put in FAFSA)…then the school is supposed to use a combo of grant sources to meet the B&G promise.

For some kids, a UC will use Pell, Cal Grants, and UC grants.

For “non-Pell” kids, a school may just use Cal Grants and UC Grants…or ONLY a UC grant. It doesn’t matter what the combo is…it just has to meet the B&G promise to cover basic UC “fees”.

That said, unless the UC made a mistake or the student has some kind of credits (units) problem, I think the problem will turn out to be that the provisional award is no longer in effect because FAFSA got updated and maybe corrected to include “other income”…and the family is no longer under the $80k threshold.

I’ve been at UCI for both of my first 2 years and for both years I received the Cal grant. And as of right now I have completed 92 units at UCI. I will definitely give the UCI FA office a call to clarify why I’m not receiving a larger grant. Maybe my aid award hasn’t been updated since I recently had my CAL grant processed and wasn’t awarded. Thank you both. This sure helped me understand the B&G plan a lot better.

Here is just a guess, but it might make you feel better until you can call the office on Tuesday: They probably made your aid packaged based on you getting a cal grant. They probably don’t have the info yet that you aren’t getting the cal grant. Once they get that info, they will update your aid award with additional grants to cover the blue and gold.
This guess is based on UC Davis telling me that they don’t get the official cal grant eligible list until some time in July.
Good luck with your phone call.

^^^That makes sense. Thank you, it sure takes some of the stress away. Now just have to call to confirm that hopefully this is the case. Thank you once again :)

I looked up Blue & Gold plan earlier, (I don’t remember the link) and the plan guarantees covering the costs for 2 years only if you’re a transfer, and 4 if you start as a freshman.
