Blue book practice tests vs real SAT

I do not understand. I am frustrated and burned out, and losing the desire to study for this test. I took some blue book practice tests and was scoring well on them. My average score was about a 2130, so naturally I expected to do this well on the real SAT as well, but I got a 1990 instead. That’s a difference of 140 points, and I don’t understand why that would happen. Maybe i was extremely nervous on test day, but what can I do to fix this problem?

Students almost always score higher on BB than the real test. And 140 isn’t really that much–it’s totally normal to have a “range” of 40-60 points per section (CR esp.), so underperforming in all three could easily cause a 140-point swing.

There’s nothing I can do to avoid underperforming on the real test? So are the BB tests just easier?

I scored 60 pts higher on the real SAT than on the highest of the 6 or 7 BB tests I took.

I think the BB tests are the most accurate and representative out of all the SAT practice tests easily available.

So do most of you overscore on the real thing or underscore, like me?

“or underscore, like me?”

Don’t label yourself as someone who underscores! You are basing it on one test! So many things can happen on a given day to cause your scores to swing. It doesn’t mean that you did anything “wrong”.

Just keep studying those blue book tests until you can explain any question to anyone. Then go take this thing again. When students of mine have scored lower than their practice scores led us to expect, the magic cure is nearly always to just do a little more review and then go take it again. And besides, what else can you do anyway?

I scored higher on the actual test than my average practice test score.

By any chance, did you take the June SAT with the time mistake?

No normanxi, this was the March. I took subject tests in June.

The practice tests were from BB, I’m assuming?

About half of my practice tests were from the blue book. I took some more that were past released SAT exams.

Sometimes it is just the test you take, and the way that your strengths/weaknesses align with the type of questions on the test that day. The only thing you can do is keep grinding and aspiring! You can do it! When you go into the test with an attitude that you will crush it, you tend to do a lot better. Keep practicing!
