Hi, my daughter is going to the Blue & Golden Saturday open house at Univ. of Del. next Saturday. Based on what we've seen online, it looks like an excellent and informative program. Has anyone been to one of these open houses, and if so, did you find it to be a good experience? Were you able to see actual residence hall rooms, or just mock rooms? Thanks.

I don’t have any experience with the Blue & Gold Weekend but I can comment on the residence hall tours. On my daughter’s initial tour and her accepted student tour, she briefly visited an occupied dorm room. I don’t think they have any mock rooms at UD.

@LR4150 - Did your daughter attend the Blue and Gold Saturday as planned? If so, what were your impressions? I would like to take my daughter to the next one, but am debating between a “regular” visit day v this open house format. Was it ridiculously crowded or was it manageable?

Thanks…

Yes, we did attend and it was an excellent event. Very informative, and it was great to see so much enthusiasm among the current students. The crowds were very manageable. It never felt crowded at all - they did a good job of dividing up the sessions so it was never overwhelming. We only had 2 complaints about the day:

1) There was not enough time given to eat lunch in the dining hall without missing some important sessions. We ended up grabbing a quick lunch at Chick Fil A and then ate dinner in the dining hall instead. We appeared to be the only non-students eating in the dining hall at 5:30pm since most prospective students & families had left after 3pm when the open house officially ended.

2) The residence hall tours were supposed to run until 3:00. We got to the Honors residence hall at 2:30 and were told that the tours were over for the day and that the program had a “typo”. Even though there were multiple families showing up at that time expecting a tour, we all got turned away. They said they will try to fix the typo in time for the next open house, but of course that didn’t do us any good.

LR, that’s a shame. I bet if someone asked an RA, Munson fellow or student, someone would have been happy to show you around! That wasn’t very nice of them to turn you away.

The staff member (RA?) standing outside the residence hall was adamant that no tours could be given due to the typo. He told us that the “tour guides’ contract only allowed them to work until 2:30” and he said that we “had to respect the privacy of the residents who were told that tours would end at 2:30”. They were not willing to negotiate under any circumstances.

Ok. The student was following the rules. However, not great publicity for perspective students! Maybe that RA could have contacted his/her supervisor under the circumstances. It was their mistake, not yours. The best part of the tours are looking at the dorms. I will tell you that the dorms are very nice.

@LR4150 Great to hear that it was, for the most part, a positive experience. It’s also helpful to know about the time constraints so that we can keep that in mind when deciding which programs to attend. Thank you!

@tigerm - Glad to hear that the dorms are nice - will be sure to make an effort to see them.
