Hi! I was wondering if it is possible to complete a dual degree at U Maryland in which I could earn a BM in piano performance as well as a BA in a math or science. Thanks!

According to this website, for just the music degree you’ll need to have 70 credits with them, core excluded. Science degrees probably have around the same amount as well.

Since science and music don’t really overlap obviously, expect to either up your creditload every semester or graduate a bit late. I don’t think it’s impossible though. You should talk more to your advisor about this during orientation. My friend is a double major in theatre and neurobiology/physiology (hopefully this is a similar enough situation), he’s a senior now and he’s been doing it since he got here. He’s been fine with both majors, but he’s expecting to graduate one year late.

It would probably take 4 1/2 to 5 years, but it’s possible. If you come in with a lot of AP credits, that will help. One thing to keep in mind is that being a music major takes a lot of time outside of classes. You are required to attend performances and noon recitals (at least for the voice department you are; I think it’s the same for piano), and that is 0 credits! That also means you can’t take another class during that time slot. Rehearsals for ensembles also take up a lot of time, too, and that’s only 1 credit. If you know what you want your second degree in, talk to that department and see what they think. It’s not impossible, but you will want to have a plan. You can find the undergraduate music handbook here [Handbooks - University of Maryland School of Music](http://music.umd.edu/current_students/handbooks). Take a look at the requirements and suggested schedule for piano.
Good luck!
