BME in Georgia Tech

What is the BME major like in Georgia Tech? I want to go into a dual MD/PHD program after college and focus on biomedical research and was wondering if the BME would help me with this goal. I know that it can negatively impact your GPA, but other than that, how well would it prepare you for an MD/PHD? Would it benefit my chances of getting into such a program?

Georgia Tech labs perform a ton of biomedical research and many of those labs both accept undergrad students and have one or several MD/PhD students currently working towards the PhD portion of their degrees. In fact, several BME professors are MD/PhDs themselves. If you attend Tech, do well in your classes, and get involved in research (which is very easy to do for students expressing interest), you will be a strong applicant to MD/PhD programs. The BME program at Tech routinely sends students to the top medical schools and PhD programs around the country and the collaboration with Emory University’s School of Medicine means that a lot of the research you can get involved with as an undergraduate is directly related to the types of medical research MD/PhDs often choose to pursue. Of course, it would be up to you to take advantage of what Tech has to offer, but the short answer is that yes, Tech is a fantastic place for aspiring MD/PhD students.

My boyfriend is in the MD/PhD program at Emory and is currently getting his PhD in BME at Tech, so once you gain admission, if you want to chat about BME research opportunities at Tech, feel free to send me a message.

Thanks so much! I’ll be sure to message you if I get accepted

My D was accepted into BME program. She would like to go to medical after college. Her biggest concern is her GPA while at GT and how it will affect her chances at top medical schools. She has heard so much about the negative effect of GPA in BME program. Any thoughts would be very helpful.
