<p>If I were to do this, what Math courses would I need to take for a Math degree (or Minor, for that matter). I am going into Math 103 this fall, and I have credit for 31 and 32. I read that Math majors should take Math 104 after 103, but then Engineering students should take 107 and 108 after 103. Wow, so many numbers.</p>
<p>Well the math major just requires 10 courses at the 100 level, so you'd go ahead and take 107 and 108, knocking out 2 of the courses. If you look at the academic bulletin, which is somewhere on the duke website, it goes into detail as to what math courses you should take, but it definitely takes into account engineers and non-engineers and whatnot.</p>
<p><em>just requires</em></p>
<p>Bachelor of Arts Degree (A.B.)
Prerequisites: Mathematics 31 or 31L or an equivalent course (Advanced Placement
course credit allowed); Mathematics 32 or 32L or 41 or an equivalent course
(Advanced Placement course credit allowed); Mathematics 103 and Mathematics
104 or equivalent courses. (Many upper level mathematics courses assume programming
experience at the level of Computer Science 4.)
Major Requirements: Seven courses in mathematics numbered above 104 including
Math 121 or 200, and Math 139 or 203.</p>
<p>Bachelor of Science Degree (B.S.)
Prerequisites: Mathematics 31 or 31L or an equivalent course (Advanced Placement
course credit allowed); Mathematics 32 or 32L or 41 or an equivalent course
(Advanced Placement course credit allowed); Mathematics 103 and 104 or equivalent
courses. (Many upper level mathematics courses assume programming experience
at the level of Computer Science 4.)
Major Requirements: Eight courses in mathematics numbered above 104 including
Mathematics 121 or 200; Mathematics 139 or 203; and one of Mathematics
136, 181, 201, 204, 205, 206, 215, 216. Also, one of Physics 41L, 51L, 53L, 61L and
one of Physics 42L, 52L, 54L, 62L.</p>
<p>Requirements for the Mathematics Minor
Prerequisites: Mathematics 103 or the equivalent. (Many upper-level courses
assume programming experience at the level of Computer Science 4.)
Minor requirements: Five courses in mathematics numbered above 103 to include
at least one course (or its equivalent) selected from the following: Mathematics
121, 132S, 135, 139, 160S, 181, 187, or any 200-level course.</p>
<p>for the majors i believe that 107/108 only count as 1 course above 104 (because 104 and 107 are both lin alg)</p>
<p>Engineers take 107 and 108; I have an e-mail in to check on where these go exactly, but the handbook for majors and minors on the math department page lists a set of 11 courses for the major for engineers (on page 9) and it starts with 1097 / 108.</p>
<p>Cross-posted (doesn't seem like it, but I was busy...dialing the phone...for a reality show. Nevermind). I mainly want to make sure that my assumption that 107 is functionally equivalent to 104 - despite the fact that it is numbered above 104 - is true. Which is ironic since...it's the Math Department a.k.a. "The Numbers People."</p>
<p>those 11 courses are just a set of recommended courses for engineers... it is still 8 over 104 for the BS</p>
<p>for everyone else, check out the handbook, it has lots of useful info.</p>
<p>So we DON'T take 104; we go straight from 103 to 107, right?</p>
<p>Correct. (10 char)</p>
<p>Great! So we can pick ANY courses above 104 that we want (except for those two that are required). We don't have to follow the sequence for engineering majors (which shows 11 math classes for some reason to take when we only need 7 above 104).</p>
<p>Yeah - I misspoke above - those 11 are the ones that the Math department thinks might be of interest to engineers, not The Set that engineers must take to get a double major.</p>
<p>Arg! Why does the BME handbook, page 7, say that Math/BME double majors should take 103, 104, and 131. I thought it was 103, 107, 108, ....
Sigh.

<p>my advice is not to worry about it until you can meet up with your advisor. You're taking 103 in the first semester anyways...so when you get up there go to the math and engineering departments, and see what the next class you have to take is. You don't really need to know that now.</p>
